3 INTRODUCTION These exemplar answers have been chosen from the summer 2017 examination series. OCR is open to a wide variety of approaches and all answers are considered on their merits. These exemplars, therefore, should not be seen as the only way to answer questions but do illustrate how the mark scheme has been applied. Please always refer to the specification ( org.uk/qualifications/as-a-level-gce-latin-h043-h443-from- 2016/#as-level) for full details of the assessment for this qualification. These exemplar answers should also be read in conjunction with the sample assessment materials and the June 2017 Examiners Report to Centres available on the OCR website The question paper, mark scheme and any resource booklet(s) will be available on the OCR website from summer Until then, they are available on OCR Interchange (school exams officers will have a login for this). It is important to note that approaches to question setting and marking will remain consistent. 4 Question 3b Read the following passages and answer the questions. ut celsas videre rates atque inter opacum adlabi nemus et tacitos incumbere remis, terrentur visu subito cunctique relictis consurgunt mensis. audax quos rumpere Pallas sacra vetat raptoque volat telo obvius ipse, 10 et procul e tumulo: iuvenes, quae causa subegit ignotas temptare vias? quo tenditis? inquit. qui genus? unde domo? pacemne huc fertis an arma? Virgil Aeneid VIII (b) ut celsas an arma (lines 6 13): how does Virgil draw attention to both the alarm of the Arcadians and the courage of Pallas? 6 Examiner commentary Point 1 the candidate makes a valid point about the placement of terrentur, translating it correctly and explaining the context of Arcadians fear of the Trojans arrival. The answer scores 2/2. Point 2 - the candidate makes a valid point about the placement of audax, translating it correctly and explaining its importance as this is the first description of Pallas. The answer scores 2/2. Point 3 there is something in what the candidate is saying here but, especially given that points 1 and 2 were also reliant on just one word of Latin, it was felt that more understanding of the Latin was required, along with an explanation of exactly how everybody was demonstrating their fear - ie leaving the tables since this would give us a better visual image of the mass panic. The answer did not quite have enough to earn a mark. Point 4 the candidate gives a good explanation of the questioning undertaken by Pallas and makes clear how Pallas is therefore seen to be courageous. The answer scores 2/2. Exemplar response 2-8 mark answer Examiner commentary This answer is given as an example of full marks on this question. All points are valid, with sufficient Latin to support them. 6

Virgil Aeneid VIII (d) ille autem guttur (lines 1 11): how does Virgil make this scene dramatic and horrific? Make four points and support your answer with reference to the Latin text. 9 Examiner commentary Point 1 - the candidate makes a valid point about the word choice of evomit, translating it correctly and explaining the significance of this unpleasant image. The answer scores 2/2. Point 2 it is fair for the candidate to discuss a visual image of the threatening smoke, although greater explanation of the contrasting metaphors of nebula and aestuat is needed. It is unclear whether the candidate knows the meaning of aestuat. The answer scores 1/2. Point 3 the superlative of plurimus does indeed emphasise the thickness of the smoke, although it was felt as a piece of Latin that it was insufficiently horrific/dramatic without adding fumus as support (or alternatively Hercules hurling himself through se iecit despite the smoke being plurimus). The answer scores 1/2. Point 4 the candidate makes a valid point about Virgil s use of grim detail, with suitable supporting reference to the Latin. The answer scores 2/2. 9

11 Question 3g In the parts of Aeneid VIII you have read, how does Virgil create a positive impression of the Arcadians? In your response you are expected, where relevant, to draw on material from those parts of the text that you have studied in English, as well as those parts you have read in Latin. 13 Examiner commentary This essay would seem to fit Level 3. There is some knowledge and understanding of the material. The candidate covers the Arcadians piety, their welcoming of the Trojans despite humble means and their family values. To earn a higher level the candidate would need greater reference to the words and actions of Evander in welcoming Aeneas, for example. There are however a couple of quite specific references and some attempts at analysis which earn the answer 6 rather than 5. Exemplar response 2-8 mark answer 13

14 Examiner commentary This essay would seem to fit level 4. It shows good knowledge of the set lines and covers the main points concerning Evander, Pallas and the other Arcadians. There is also a good response to the question. For level 5, the candidate would need to add a little more detail and/or refer to some material outside of the set lines. 14
