NATURAL BIO-STIMULANTS GIFA 2018 Richard Phillips Managing Director.
Regulation in the EU Current Situation. ( Grey Area. No regulation.) The European Parliament supports 1 Establishing an equitable EU market for biostimulants, 2 Defining biostimulants and clarifiying the boundary with plant protection products; 3 Developing safety criteria and harmonized standards Timescale Probably by 2020? This will remove snakeoil products from the market. 2
Agricultural Biostimulants Agricultural Biostimulants include diverse formulations of compounds, substances and micro-organisms that are applied to plants or soils as complemetary to crop nutrition and protection to improve crop vigour, yields, quality and tolerance of abiotic stresses. Bio-stimulants foster plant growth and development throughout the crop life cycle from seed germination to plant maturity in various ways. Source : European Biostimulants Industry Council 3
Amino Acid Based Bio-Stimulants Why amino acids? Amino-acids are the building blocks of proteins. Amino-acids Di-peptides Poly-peptides Proteins Our bodies are 20% protein! All plants and animals have to synthesize amino-acids in order to function and grow. Plants use the naturally occurring nutrients or fertiliser applied to the soil as the substrate from which to synthesize amino-acids. By applying amino-acids directly to the plant we can short circuit the growth process.
What type of amino-acids? Amino-acids can be extracted from animal protein, plant protein or be manufactured, through bacterial fermentation or chemical synthesis. The plant does not make a distinction provided they are in the L form! Amino-acids can be in the L or D form. L and D forms contain the same atoms. Imagine them as left and right hands! Only L forms can be used by the plant ( or animal). D forms are used by bacteria.
Amino acid sources 1 Animal Origin a) Slaughter house waste materials, fish waste, feathers, skin etc b) Human food grade protein. 2 Plant Origin High protein content plant sources, soya, maize etc 3 Bacterial fermentation 4 Chemical synthesis. 6
Extraction Methods Animal and Plant based amino acids are extracted by 1 Acid Hydrolysis Or 2 Enzymatic Hydrolysis 7
Why enzymatic hydrolysis? AminoA Biostimulants ONLY contain L form amino-acids ( and Glycine). All our products contain amino-acids that are extracted by enzymes ( or manufactured). Many manufacturers use acid hydrolysis. Amino-acids are held together by covalent bonds ( share electrons) These are easily destroyed by acids. So products produced by acid hydrolysis have a much smaller range of amino-acids. For example Glutamic acid ( GLA) found in many products is the precursor of several amino-acids, so the plant still has to perform more processes to be able to use it! This uses more energy.
Animal v Plant 25 AminoA PLUS compared with AminoA MAAX How the profiles compare Al Arg Asp Cys Gla Gly His Iso-L Leu Lys Meth Phen Pro Ser Thre Tryo Tryp Val PLUS MAAX 9
How do our products work? Many amino-acid products contain small amounts of active ingredient. But they only work in ideal conditions. (Growth stage/weather etc). that they contain the full range of amino-acids in the L form, therefore they can influence the plant at any growth stage ( provided that growth is not already optimal.) From Germination To Protein Synthesis ( in Wheat) or Brix sugar production ( Sugar Beet).
How do our products work? The TOOLBOX! Using AminoA Biostimulants is like throwing the toolbox at the plant! We don t know if you need a saw, a spanner or a hammer today! YOU CHOOSE!
Amino Acid Based Bio-Stimulants Strawberries Spring 2015 Treated by AminoA products on the right Plants can effectively utilize and assimilate only the amino acids in the L (levorotatory - L-α type) form. AminoA products are high-quality amino acid based bio-stimulants, whereas AminoA uses enzymatic hydrolysis to extract the ingredient amino acids from a variety of protein sources. The Main Limiting Factors of Crop Yield Nutrient Availability Disease Insect Damage Microbiologically Compromised Soils Weed Competition Environmental Stress waterlogging, drought, frost, poor photosynthetic conditions Enzymatic hydrolysis is the process that all the amino acids obtained are in the L-α type. Impact of Amino-Acid based Bio-Stimulants (when used as complementary to crop nutrition and protection) increase nutrient availability by stimulating root development and increasing the uptake of micronutrients prime the plant's natural defence mechanisms and aiding the penetration of fungicides improve the uptake of insecticides provide a feed source for soil microbes reduce herbicide phytotoxicity in the crop and increase the susceptibility of the target weed provide the plant with a readymade source of amino-acids essential for cell division and growth the product of which is limited under conditions of stress
