You start by researching the digestive system and terminology. Task: Criteria Evidence 1. In a written document describe nutrition and the nutritional requirements, including macronutrients, (carbohydrates, proteins, fats), micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), fibre, nutritional requirement essential and non-essential. Research the internet to find a public health source website and describe recommended daily allowance (RDA), Optimum level, Safe intake, and Estimated Average Requirements, standard abbreviations RDA, SI and EAR). 2. In a written document describe the structure and function of the digestive system (include digestion, absorption and excretion, and be familiar with the enzymes that break down specific food sources). There should be a clear link to the process of absorption and excretion of digested food. 4 Assignment Brief Centre no Qualification Unit 11 Start 5/10/11 Deadline 19/10/11 Assessor E Williams Assignment Title Sport Nutrition (P3, P4, M1, M2, D1) The purpose of this assignment: Balancing Energy Intake and Expenditure Scenario: You decide to practically explore different methods of energy intake and expenditure, including anthropometric measures. Task: Criteria Evidence 1. Practically explore the different energy requirements needed for different sports and different body measurements. (You will need to record a description of calories, joules, kilocalories and kilojoules, sources of energy, fats, carbs, and proteins). In pairs research and describe the following measuring requirements: Body Composition, lean body mass, percentage of body fat and produce a presentation for your class. Make sure you include information on body weight and calorimerty (direct/indirect). P3 Word Document Teacher Witness statement Presentation Provide an explanation of energy intake and expenditure and explain the importance of energy balance in relation to sports performance. 2. In your practical lesson conduct a practical assessment of one other pupil, along with identifying a sport of their choice. Conduct a practical assessment of a 10 minute run and 10 minute bike, record the KCAL burnt. You also need to record their age, gender, the climate and the type of physical activity. Following the practical assessment you will need to compare the energy balance (food equivalent) to the KCAL burnt. The information can be described in a word document. Research, design and administer a food log. Having increased your knowledge in this area, with the information from the food log, devise a two week diet for a selected sports performer. Task: Criteria Evidence 1. In pairs complete the food log sheet and discuss each others sheets. Research and produce a mind map to describe the components of a healthy balanced diet. Include carbohydrates, fats, proteins, water, fibre, vitamins and minerals. For the merit explain the components of a healthy balanced diet. P6 M3 Food Log sheet Mind Map 2. Produce an appropriate two week diet plan for a sports performer for a specific activity. This should also include relevant hydration. You must also assess the needs of the sports performer, is the programme for weight loss, muscle gain, weight gain, fat gain, fat loss. You must focus on the description of a balance diet, giving specific examples of food sources (macro and micronutrients) and food groups (grain, veg etc). To achieve M4, explain the plan taking in to consideration the status of the performer (amateur, semi professional, professional or elite). This will have significant bearing on the dietry plan. To achieve the Distinction you must justify the reason you chose the 2 week plan. Along with providing the reasons why you designed the programme the way you did.
