1 SAS Upcoming Events 10/26/ Dear Parents, We have had an incident of Fifth Disease among one of our students. This student also happens to be in Campus Care, so there is a possibility of exposure to more than just her immediate classmates. If you have a child in Campus Care, please see the attachments to this . One provides information about the virus itself and the other contains special information for pregnant women. There are particular precautions for pregnant women exposed to the virus to take. If you have any questions after reading the information, do not hesitate to contact the school office and we will help as we are able. There are some changes that we have had to make to the school calendar- mostly relating to the preparation of our WASC/WCEA Accreditation Self-Study. The faculty and staff need some additional time to work on the report. There are also some relating to class events and Mass. I would like to give you some advanced notice of the changes. These changes will also be added to our Google Calendar that you can access at any time on the school website. 4 Children-Our Most Important Asset & Future Investments 5680 North Maroa Avenue Fresno, California (559) Fax (559) October 25, 2018 FIFTH DISEASE EXPOSURE NOTICE Dear Parents/Guardians: Your child may have been exposed to the virus that causes Fifth Disease also known as Slapped Cheek Syndrome. Below is information provided by the California Department of Health related to this condition, and on the second attachment is an information page from the CDC about the risks to pregnant women. The information provided does not replace talking with your health care provider if you or your child is ill. If your child has symptoms, please seek diagnosis and treatment from your health care provider as soon as possible. FIFTH DISEASE (SLAPPED CHEEK SYNDROME): A viral illness caused by Parvovirus B19. What are the symptoms? Low or no fever, Runny Nose, Headache, Red Cheeks, A rash on the body, which is sometimes itchy, Joint pain (for adults). How is it spread? Parvovirus B19 spreads through respiratory secretions, such as saliva, sputum, or nasal mucus, when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Parvovirus B19 can also spread through blood or blood products. A pregnant woman who is infected with parvovirus B19 can pass the virus to her baby. A pregnant household member who may have been exposed to this disease needs to consult with a medical provider. When do symptoms start? Symptoms usually start 4 to 14 days after a person is exposed to the virus. Should I keep my child at home and away from group settings (i.e. preschool, childcare)? Yes, until fever and rash is gone and child meets school s readmission criteria. 5 Pregnancy and Fifth Disease Fifth disease is a mild rash illness caused by parvovirus B19. This disease is usually not a problem for pregnant women and their babies. About half of pregnant women are immune to parvovirus B19, so they and their babies are usually protected from getting the virus and fifth disease. Pregnant women who are not immune usually have only mild illness if they are exposed to fifth disease. Also, their babies usually do not have any problems. Rarely, a baby will develop severe anemia caused by its mother s infection with fifth disease, and the woman may have a miscarriage. But this is not common. It happens less than 5% of the time among all pregnant women with parvovirus B19 infection, and it happens more commonly during the first half of pregnancy. Testing for Parvovirus B19 during Pregnancy A blood test for parvovirus B19 can show if you are immune to this virus and have no recent sign of infection, are not immune and have never been infected, or have had a recent infection. Monitoring Parvovirus B19 Infection during Pregnancy If you are pregnant, you may want to talk with your healthcare provider if you have been exposed to someone with fifth disease, have an illness that might be caused by parvovirus B19 infection, or were recently infected with parvovirus B19. There is no single recommended way to monitor pregnant women with parvovirus B19 infection. Your healthcare provider may recommend additional prenatal visits, blood tests, and ultrasounds.
