Diagnosis and Management of Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis primary sclerosing cholangitis Primary sclerosing cholangitis is a chronic cholestatic liver disease that can shorten life and may require liver transplantation. The cause is unknown, although it is commonly associated with colitis. ACG Clinical Guideline: Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis primary sclerosing cholangitis Primary sclerosing cholangitis is a chronic fibrosing inflammatory process that results in the obliteration of the biliary tree and biliary cirrhosis. There is variability in the extent of involvement of the biliary system. Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis: Introduction primary sclerosing cholangitis 2 Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis What is PSC? Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) is a rare and chronic disease in which the ducts that transport bile from the liver develop inflammation and scar over time. â Bile is made in the liver and travels to the intestine through bile ducts. Though rare, it poses several clinical concerns for the managing physician. There are currently limited therapeutic options in the management of the condition and weak evidence base behind them. Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis: Therapeutic Options and primary sclerosing cholangitis Primary sclerosing cholangitis is a chronic cholestatic liver disease that is characterized by inflammation and destruction of intra- and extrahepatic bile ducts. Primary sclerosing cholangitis can progress to biliary cirrhosis and often requires transplantation. Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis - an overview primary sclerosing cholangitis Primary sclerosing cholangitis is a rare, chronic cholestatic liver disease characterised by intrahepatic or extrahepatic stricturing, or both, with bile duct fibrosis. Inflammation and fibrosis of bile ducts and the liver are followed by impaired bile formation or flow and progressive liver dysfunction. Page 3
