1 Emergency relief Weekly Newsletter n 13 This newsletter is prepared in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). It is based on data received by health partners and on joint evaluations between the Ministry of Public Health and WHO. Period of 17 to 23 July 2011 Main issues: Due mainly to climatic conditions and the month of Ramadan, some refugees of Remada camp were housed in Djerba and others are being accommodated in educational structures of Remada. UNHCR has delivered 4 ambulances type B to 4 regional hospitals of Medenine Tataouine, Zarzis and Ben Guerdane. A number of health faciliites still refuse to communicate their activity data and particularly their epidemiological data to the health authority of the country. 1. Demographic data : Evolution in the number of migrants and refugees in the camps during the week Evolution in the number of migrants and refugees in the camps juil 15-juil 16-juil 17-juil 18-juil 19-juil 20-juil 21-juil 22-juil 23-juil Axe choucha Ras Jdir Axe dhiba Tataouine Evolution in the number of migrants and refugees in the camps since the beginning of the crisis: Source : UNHCR Stability in the number of migrants at the Ras Jedir axis as well as in the proportions of the "non- repatriables." The decrease in the number of refugees at Dhiba axis is due to the fact that the camp of Ramada has gone down from 770 refugees on July 19 to 389 refugees on July 20.

Management of care: The health coordination meeting in Tataouine covered essentially the support by the Tunisian Red Crescent (TRC) in medicines (for acute and chronic diseases especially), program review activities of NGOS (especially MSF) according to the concentration of refugees in cities and villages of the region of Tataouine, and the of control of medicines in circulation in the governorate. In Choucha the meeting dealt essentially with the reorganization of medical consultations and referral to public structures and with the coordination between the various participants, child nutrition, and attention to epidemiological surveillance. 4. 4 b. Activity of consultations 6. Environmental health The situation in the camps of Choucha is improving especially in regard to solid waste. UNHCR has proposed a project to treat drinking water by osmosis. It will probably be operational within two weeks. Hygiene, in general, has significantly improved in Remada camp. Works of improvement of the sanitary conditions at the level of the kitchen are current. 7. Health Promotion: In subtropical climates the usually hard weather conditions are compounded by the harshh summer heat, making the refugees health more fragile, particularly among vulnerable groups (Children, pregnant women, elderly and people with disabilities). This vulnerability consists of: The risk of heatstroke by prolonged exposure in hot conditions. The possibility of sunstroke (or of sunburn) in case of ineffective protection. An increased need for water, requiring to drink frequently to avoid dehydration. Persistent threats of venomous bites with at time serious consequences due to the proliferation of scorpions and snakes in this favourable biotope. SEVERE SUMMER ACCIDENT PREVENTION Protection against scorpions and vipers. Be sure to keep the inside of the housing as well as its immediate periphery very clean by clearing rock and wood piles favoured by scorpions and reptiles. Before going to sleep, suspend removed clothes (jackets, shirts ) and shake them well before putting them back the next day. Check and shake systematically shoes before putting them on, one by one. In the evening, walk around the camp with closed shoes, like sports shoes. Otherwise, avoid poorly lit areas, especially near water points. Before the occurrence of any venomous sting (as it is the case now): The staff in charge of refugees must be notified about the nearest emergency points to the refugees housing: Hours (day/night), staff service and active phone, evacuation vehicles to act more effectively in case of venomous bites. 8. General Information: Emma Fitzrpatrick (WHO) will depart in the middle of the week. She will be replaced by Dr Alice Croisier. UNHCR, in association with some national and international organizations established a program to supply food to the refugee families in the southern governorates during the month of Ramadan. Packages weighing 65 kg will be distributed before the beginning of the sacred month. Useful definitions issued by WHO for doctors providing services to migrants in different health clinics. (See the Descriptivee list of medical- health activities.
