Step 1 Read This! Seriously...you ll need to follow these 5 simple steps in order to use your LUMOback successfully. Wake Your Sensor. To start using your sensor, wake it up by plugging it into a USB power source. Don t worry, you ll only have to wake it once. 1
Step 2 Download the App Download the app from the Apple App Store now. Step 3 Wear Your Sensor Follow the steps below. 1. Unplug the sensor and place it on your lower back, either directly on your skin or over a layer of clothing. The LUMO logo and circular Touch button should be facing out. LUMOback is compatible with the following: Apple Devices: iphone 4S or later, ipod Touch 5th gen, ipad 3rd gen or later, ipad Mini. 2. Wrap the belt around your waist directly above your hip bones, and secure the Velcro near your belly button. 3. If your belt doesn t fit snuggly around your waist, take * Don t have one of these devices? You can still use LUMOback to get posture it off and adjust the velcro straps inside the belt. feedback, but won t be able to see your data or track progress over time. 2 3
Step 4 Calibrate Your Sensor Follow the steps below. Step 5 Test Your Sensor. 1. Walk around for 30 seconds to orient the sensor. 2. Sit down and get into good posture: Roll your pelvis forward so that you are sitting on your sit bones. Lift your chest. Hold this good posture position for the duration of the next step. 1. Lean back into your seat, slouching from your lower back. The sensor will buzz if it is calibrated correctly. 2. Now sit up straight--rotate your pelvis forward and lift your chest. Your sensor will NOT buzz if it is calibrated correctly. 3. Press and hold the circular Touch button on the sensor until you feel five quick buzzes. Let go of the button and hold good posture while the sensor calibrates. 3. If your sensor is buzzing while you are in good posture, After five seconds, you ll feel five more quick buzzes go back to page 4 and recalibrate your sensor. confirming that calibration is complete. 4 5
That s it. You re good to go. But if you want more, read on. 6 7
Turn your sensor on and off. Charge your sensor. 1. Lay the sensor flat or hold it button side up. 2. Press and hold the Touch button. 1. Plug the sensor into a USB power source using the included cable. 2. Charge for at least 15 minutes upon purchase. It takes about 2 hours to charge the sensor completely. 3. A complete charge will last for about 5 days of continuous use. ON Indicator light will flash green & sensor will vibrate once. OFF Indicator light will flash red & sensor will vibrate twice. Tap the Touch Button to view charge level: The sensor has more than one day of charge remaining. The sensor has one day or less of charge remaining. Recharge soon. While Sensor is charging: Solid Sensor is fully charged. Pulsating Sensor is charging. * If you are wearing the sensor and want to turn it on or off while it is on your back, flip the sensor up from your back (as if it were lying flat, button side up) and press and hold the Touch Button. If you lie the sensor on a flat surface, button side up, the sensor will detect that it s not being worn and will not report data for that time period. 8 9
What is good posture? Sitting with good posture. The LUMOback sensor gently vibrates when you slouch from your lower back, making you aware of your poor posture. But how do you get into good posture? Good posture is more than having a straight back; it s all about your engaging core muscles and correcting the position of your pelvis. 1. Sit slightly forward in your chair. Having your knees below your hips is ideal, adjust your seat accordingly. 2. Rotate your pelvis forward and lift your chest. 3. Maintain this position by drawing your abdominals in slightly, keeping your shoulders down and back and your chin tucked in
Standing with good posture. Orient your sensor. 1. Stand with feet shoulder width apart; weight distributed evenly in both feet. Walking around while wearing the sensor resets the sensor s orientation. 2. Chest lifted, shoulders down and back; arms rotated back so the palms face the body. 3. Eyes level, chin retracted; imagine your head is being pulled straight up by a string. Engage glutes/ abdominals for additional support and stability. Walk around for about 30 seconds, while wearing the sensor snug on your lower back. The sensor continuously re-orients itself throughout the day as you walk around. If your sensor doesn t seem to be tracking your posture and movements correctly, a short walk about 30 seconds should correct things. If things still seem off, try recalibrating your sensor
Calibrate your sensor. 1. Get into good sitting or standing posture as described on pages 11 and 12. Hold this good posture position for the duration of the next step. 2. Press and hold the circular Touch button on the sensor until you feel five quick buzzes. Let go of the button and hold good posture while the sensor calibrates. 3. After five seconds, you ll feel five more quick buzzes. This completes calibration and confirms that your good posture position has been saved on the sensor. When to calibrate your sensor. The LUMOback sensor works for everybody, but only if it is calibrated correctly. This process stores your good posture position on the sensor and determines when the sensor will vibrate, indicating bad posture. When should you calibrate? 1. When you first setup your sensor. 2. When your sensor is vibrating, but you are in good posture. 3. When you put the sensor on a little bit differently than when you calibrated previously
LUMOback vibrates when your lower back slouches. The LUMOback sensor will coach you by gently vibrating when you slouch from your lower back. When you move into good posture, while either sitting or standing, your sensor will stop vibrating.* The sensor is smart enough to know if you are walking, running, riding in a car, or lying down. Your LUMOback sensor will not vibrate during these times. When does the sensor vibrate? Good posture starts with the lower back and your LUMOback sensor only detects slouching from your lower back. Your sensor will vibrate when you: Slouch back into your chair. Bend forward at your desk. Lean back onto one leg while standing. Bend over to pick something up for an extended period of time. Your sensor will NOT vibrate when you: Hunch your shoulders or neck into bad upper back posture. When you are walking or running. When you are lying down. After you have been driving in a car for a few minutes. * If your sensor seems to be vibrating while you are in good posture, go to page 4 and recalibrate your sensor
How does the LUMOback sensor work? The angle of your lower back. LUMOback uses three inputs to determine good posture. 1. The angle of your lower back and pelvis. 2. An internal accelerometer to determine movement. 3. Motion algorithms that work with the accelerometer to determine position. When you calibrate the sensor, you set a good posture angle. This good posture angle is used as the basis for measuring changes in pelvic tilt. Because the sensor is worn centered on your lower back, the good posture angle from calibration gives the sensor information about your lower back posture. Hunching only your shoulders often does not change the angle of your lower back, therefore the sensor does not detect slouching from upper back
The internal accelerometer. Motion algorithms. The accelerometer inside the LUMOback sensor collects data about your motion, and processes this data to tell when you re sitting, standing, laying, walking, running, or even driving. The data collected by the accelerometer is run through a series of precisely built motion algorithms the world s most advanced biomechanical model of pelvic tilt and core body movement. These algorithms determine your position as you move from sitting to standing, walking to running. The good posture angle collected during calibration tells our motion algorithms whether you are in good or bad posture
The LUMOback app. Meet LUMO. Download the app from the Apple App Store. Compatible devices: iphone 4S or later, ipod Touch 5th generation, ipad 3rd generation or later, ipad Mini. Open the app and follow the onboarding instructions. The LUMOback app features LUMO, our real-time feedback avatar. LUMO mimics your movements. He walks when you walk, runs when you run, and he even hops into his car when you go for a drive. Most importantly, LUMO slouches when you slouch and gives you immediate visual feedback on you body position as you move out of and back into good posture
The vibration modes. With the LUMOback app, you have complete control over how your sensor vibrates. Advanced Vibration Controls. You can also set how strict or lenient you want your sensor to be. Pulse Mode: The sensor will continuously pulse with buzzes for as long as you are in bad posture. Barely Slouched Buzz Once: The sensor will buzz once, each time you move into bad posture. Extremely Slouched Vibrate ON/OFF: When you want the sensor to continue to collect data but not vibrate, switch it into Vibrate OFF mode
Insight Tiles. Your data. Over time. Posture matters. Track how much you slouch and how much you sit or stand straight each day, with an easy-to-read Posture Score. Sit less. LUMO automatically tracks the hours you spend sitting, so you can sit less each day. Stand up and be counted. Improve your health and your life simply by sitting less and standing up more often. Move more. Track steps and distance traveled while walking and running, and the calories you ve burned while wearing the sensor. Sleep well. Track the hours you spend sleeping and the positions you sleep in. Track your progress over time. In addition to daily metrics on Insight Tiles, the app keeps track of your weekly and monthly history. Tap any Insight Tile and see trends over time. Learn where you have been improving, and what to focus on next
And more... Troubleshooting LUMOback. The LUMOback team works hard to continuously improve the sensor and app experience with over-the-air firmware updates and new releases in the App Store and Google Play store. Keep your app up to date and be sure to keep your app open long enough for an inprogress firmware to complete. It will be worth the wait! 28 29
Troubleshooting the sensor. Troubleshooting the app. If your sensor doesn t seem to be tracking your posture and vibrating correctly, try following steps: 1. Make sure you are wearing the sensor correctly. See Page Reorient the sensor by walking around for 30 seconds. See page Recalibrate you sensor and test your calibration. Pages 4 and If none of the above seems to work, reset your sensor to factory settings: Plug your sensor into a USB power source and hold the Touch button for 20 seconds until you see the sensor light turn pink and the sensor vibrates. Turn your sensor on, and then reorient and recalibrate your sensor as instructed on page If your sensor still doesn t seem to be tracking your posture and vibrating correctly, you ll find additional support resources here: Recalibrate If at any point LUMO doesn t seem to be tracking your position accurately, tap the menu icon in the upper left corner, click Connect & Calibrate, and then select calibrate. Reset Bluetooth If LUMO seems to be suffering connection issues, restart the Bluetooth on your device. 1. Go to your Settings menu on your ios device. 2. Tap on the Bluetooth menu. 3. Toggle ON and OFF switch to reset device Bluetooth
