1 In March of 2006, the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) sent a survey to all currently active PT and PTA education programs in the Untied States requesting information about the textbooks currently used by the programs in the education of physical therapist and physical therapist assistants. The survey was sent because the Federation wanted to make sure that the reference books used in the development of the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) reflect texts currently in use in PT and PTA education programs. A total of 95 PT programs (47%) and 120 PTA programs (53%) responded to the request (see Exhibit 1). The greatest number of texts used by a responding PT program was 114; the least, one. For responding PTA programs the greatest number of texts used was 74; the least, one. An average of 40 texts was used in the PT programs, and 19 in the PTA programs. Exhibit 1. Summary of book Use by Survey Respondents Program Response Type Rate # of Contacted # of Responding Minimum # texts reported per program Maximum # texts reported per program Average # of texts reported per program PT % PTA % Exhibit 2 summarizes the most frequently used texts by PT and PTA programs. A total of eight texts were used by 51 or more PT programs, and nine texts were used by 51 or more PTA programs. Similarly, seven texts were used by between PT programs, and 4 were used by between PTA programs. Overall, 38 texts were used by 40% or more of the PT programs in the sample, while 24 books were used by 20% or more of the PTA programs responding to the survey. Exhibit 2. Frequency of Reporting Use of Different s # of # s Used by PT # s Used by PTA Lists of frequently used texts (used by at least 50% of the programs that responded to the survey) were assembled for each program type. Exhibit 3 lists the most frequently used texts across all PT programs, and Exhibit 4 lists the most frequently used texts across all PTA programs. 1
