2 Summary The foot and ankle is a challenging region both anatomically and functionally. With a host of possibly differential diagnosis and tightly packed anatomy, it can be confusing, right? You have: Some diagnoses requiring imaging or surgical intervention such as subtle instability and talar dome injuries. To decide if orthotics are needed, if they will have an effect or simply, have the correct shoes been prescribed. Others that need referral to a sports physician. AND others needing a personalised structure exercise and movement based rehabilitation programme. So many choices!! So, with the number of quality foot and ankle courses few and far between, many clinicians fail to get the answers they want and some are left asking: Is there something else I could be doing to get a better result?' Content Mr Ioan Tudur Jones Ankle ligament injuries in athletes from sports field to operating room Treating athletes and their injuries can be stressful to manage. The goal is always a swift, yet safe return to sport. Identifying frank to subtle instability along with additional pathology that may mean they will not recover with conservative measures and need further referral can assist in facilitating the best recovery. Mr Tudur Jones will explore the following areas through his experience as a surgeon and working closely with musculoskeletal practitioners to help you best manage this patient group. Dr Catherine Spencer Smith 'Tricky Trotters' Foot and Ankle injuries in Sport Foot and ankle injuries are hugely common in sport, and they present a considerable challenge to those who treat them. This talk aims to help demystify the 'nonrecovering ankle'. It draws on Cath's 15 years as a Sports Physician treating people up to Olympic level to outline her clinical expertise in how best to make the best differential diagnosis and to clarify when and why to refer on and how to optimise a patient's return to sport. Cath will cover: The notso innocent inversion injuries when should we be concerned and when should we refer? Sneaky high ankle sprains, persistent pain, instability & gutter syndromes, and nottobemissed problems what to look for, which imaging best demonstrates them and hence which to request and of course, what to do about it. Masqueraders and troublefromthepast. Questions to ask and key things to look for on examination to uncover contributing factors commonly missed. Rehabilitation and injury prevention what could we do better tips and trick Amanda Lau Orthotics and Shoe Prescription for the Sporting Ankle: Are you up to date? Orthotics and shoe design has changed and continued to evolve over the past 10 years with developments in orthotic manufacture, and materials used. To understand current thinking it is vital to allow you to make the best decisions regarding who to refer for orthotics or new shoes and when should you refer them. Amanda will address:

4 What role do orthotics and correct shoe prescription play in managing the sporting ankle? Should someone go to a minimal shoe (barefoot running) or stick with conventional shoes. Her experience in functional assessment and working with major brands from the footwear industry will help to answer these questions and help guide you with treatment options for your patient. Mark Leyland The Foot Bone is connected to the body bone In a structure comprising of 26 bones most people consider the biomechanics of the foot and ankle largely in terms of the 1st toe and the subtalar and talocrural joint. After that they often refer to a podiatrist! If asked, most people can't explain in the depth required to adequately manage this region, what happens through the forefoot, mid foot, rear foot and the lower quadrant and upper quadrant. Could you? Knowing, understanding and applying this in your assessment is vital to adequately assess to functionally rehabilitee foot and ankle problems and especially sprained ankles. During this session, you will see the chain reaction biomechanics of gait that are triggered by the calcaneal eversion at initial foot contact and especially how this may differ after an ankle/foot injury. The focus will be on functional assessment and treatment strategies post ankle sprains and how to integrate the whole body from day one. We will also consider rehab drills, the role of orthotics and how they can increase range of movement and finally stability and mobility strategies you might utilise in assessment and treatment.
