Ride Designs Posture and Postural Tendencies. What s the Difference? tom@ridedesigns.com Welcome and Course Objectives Identify 3 postural tendencies in sitting. Prioritize seating goals relative to rest, fine motor and gross motor function. Differentiate between posture and postural tendencies. Identify the one desirable postural tendency for resting postures. Posture What is Posture? Attitude or position of body. What s it for? Is it static or dynamic? What is good posture? What does it do for you? 2013, Aspen Seating/Ride Designs 1
Posture AND Movement Are they related? Describe the desired posture for: Rest Fine motor movement Gross motor movement Can a seating system position a person? So What are the goals and how should they be prioritized? 2013, Aspen Seating/Ride Designs 2
Which task category is of greatest importance? Rest Fine Motor Gross Motor Do the Sums Which task category does the typical wheelchair user find him/herself engaged in the most? 1. Rest (The holy grail) Support a nondestructive resting posture. Optimal alignment Rest into postural supports. Stay in chair! 2013, Aspen Seating/Ride Designs 3
2. Fine Motor Provide sufficient support to promote fine motor function without loss of core stability and alignment. 3. Gross Motor Do not block transitions into gross motor functional postures. Minimize deviation of core alignment from rest. 4. Reposition Ease/enhance ability to reposition/be repositioned to resting alignment. 2013, Aspen Seating/Ride Designs 4
Postural Tendency What is postural tendency? When does postural tendency become actual movement? Forces acting on body, intrinsic or extrinsic, are stronger than the resistance to movement. So What IS the difference between posture and postural tendency? What is a desirable tendency? 2013, Aspen Seating/Ride Designs 5
WHAT ARE THE THREE POSTURAL TENDENCIES IN SITTING? Identify Postural Tendency 3 Tendencies Posterior Anterior Lateral/Rotational WHAT IS THE ONLY DESIRABLE POSTURAL TENDENCY DURING REST? Which one? HINT: Don t confuse tendency with posture. 2013, Aspen Seating/Ride Designs 6
Only One Desirable Tendency What are the goals for posture and tendency for the three tendencies? Posterior Postural Goal: Tendency Goal: Anterior Postural Goal: Tendency Goal: Lateral-rotational Postural Goal: Tendency Goal: Trick question. (Are you really understanding this?) Can you have an anterior pelvic tilt with a posterior tendency? 2013, Aspen Seating/Ride Designs 7
Does the posterior postural tendency create a corresponding tendency to slide INTO or OUT OF the wheelchair? So How do we keep people from sliding out of their wheelchairs? Create a desirable tendency, then resist it! How and where? What about skin? What must be present to improve postural alignment at rest? Flexibility Tolerance of correction Ability to position or be positioned consistently. 2013, Aspen Seating/Ride Designs 8
Fixed What does it mean? Won t budge! Pathological or surgical fusion. To midline Through midline Towards correction Towards destructive tendency Summary Identify 3 postural tendencies in sitting. Prioritize seating goals relative to rest, fine motor and gross motor function. Differentiate between posture and postural tendencies. Identify the one desirable postural tendency for resting postures. 2013, Aspen Seating/Ride Designs 9
