1 Lung Function Reporting Course 11 th & 12 th May 2015 Venue: Grand Central Hotel 99 Gordon Street, Glasgow, Scotland, G1 3SF Course Overview This course is aimed at advanced level respiratory physiologists involved in the clinical interpretation of pulmonary function tests, Consultant Physicians and Specialist Registrars. Learning Outcomes By the end of the course delegates will be able to: Understand the role of clinical assessment in the diagnosis of disease Understand the changes in pulmonary function parameters that occur as a result of a variety of disease/disorders To learn how to write a clinical report To be able to critically analyse test results To learn how to interpret lung function results and relate these findings to disease processes and or clinical diagnosis ARTP Lung Function Reporting course 1

4 Session aims and learning outcomes Day 1 Pathophysiology Session 1: Practical Workshop: Imaging quiz Aim of session - To review available imaging techniques used in the assessment of respiratory disease Identify the differences between plain film radiography, computed tomography and high resolution computed tomography. Describe the different views obtained with a variety of imaging techniques. Rank the techniques in order of preference/suitability. Identify common clinical conditions from a variety of imaging examples. Session 2: Clinical assessment of the breathless patient Aim of session - To emphasize the importance of taking a comprehensive clinical patient history and describe how this is effectively undertaken. Assess dyspnoea in the context of pulmonary and non-pulmonary causation. Describe the causes of wheeze and its importance. State the diagnostic investigations that would be appropriate to answer the clinical question asked. Provide differential diagnosis based on the clinical information supplied in case presentations. Session 3: Answering the Clinical Question Aim of session - To identify the appropriate methods for answering the clinical question that is posed within the limits of professional and legal boundaries. Differentiate between what is a statement and a clinical question to be answered State the boundaries of what an answer should contain List the common pitfalls and apply this knowledge when reviewing unusual cases. 5 Session 4: The role of lung function testing in the assessment and management of respiratory disease. Aim of session - To outline the role of pulmonary function testing in the assessment and management of respiratory disease Describe the pathophysiological changes in a range of respiratory disease. Discuss the role of pulmonary function tests to confirm or refute a clinical diagnosis of o Airway disease. o Interstitial Lung Disease o Rheumatic and Connective Tissue Disorders Outline the role of pulmonary function tests in monitoring the progression and effects of therapeutic interventions on: o Airway disease. o Interstitial Lung Disease o Rheumatic and Connective Tissue Disorders Session 5: Pre-operative assessment Aim of session - To review the requirements for pre-operative assessment in a range of conditions List common respiratory contraindications to surgical procedures State potential complications that may arise during surgery. Identify the appropriate respiratory investigates that are required pre-operatively for a range of surgical procedures including: o Thoracic surgery o Cardiac surgery o Vascular surgery o Colorectal surgery Session 6: How to report Paediatric Lung Function Tests Aim of session - To outline the differences between paediatric and adult lung function testing and how these differences affect the way that paediatric lung function tests are reported. Identify the usual parameters measured in paediatric lung function testing. Compare and contrast those with the measurements obtained from adult lung function tests. Identify the key information that should be included in a paediatric clinical report Develop a systematic approach to paediatric clinical reports ARTP Lung Function Reporting course 5
6 Day 2 Clinical Reporting Session 1: How to write a clinical report Aim of session - To review the key information a clinical report should be contain and what issues should be considered in the preparation of a clinical report. Describe the difference between a technical and a clinical report Assess if the results are technically acceptable for reporting. Identify the key information that should be included in a clinical report Develop a systematic approach to clinical reports Session 2: How to report bronchodilator response Aim of session - To review the range of guidelines describing a significant bronchodilator response and how these can be applied clinically List the commonly used guidelines for assessing the significance of the bronchodilator response Critically appraise the available guidelines. Select the appropriate guidelines to use in clinical practice Session 3: Interpreting Spirometry and Bronchodilator Response Aim of session - Practical workshop: Interpreting Spirometry and Bronchodilator Response The workshop lead will guide delegates through a practical workshop considering how spirometry and bronchodilator response should be interpreted correctly. Session 4: Practical Workshop: Interpreting Lung Function Tests Aim of session - The workshop leaders will guide delegates through a practical session considering how full lung function results should be interpreted correctly. Session 5: Indications for further respiratory testing Aim of session - To outline a logical and consistent approach where consideration of further respiratory tests is indicated Identify the limitations of full lung function tests. List the range of available diagnostic respiratory tests. Select appropriate further investigations to answer the clinical question posed. ARTP Lung Function Reporting course 6
7 Session 6: Practical Workshop: Interpreting lung function tests Aim of session - Delegates will work through a series of full lung function results in groups and make their own clinical interpretation. Session 7: Workshop discussion and feedback Aim of session - Delegates will feed back in groups the interpretations derived at from the preceding session.
