Targeting Marketing Letters Three lab studies completed DISSERTATION RESEARCH Consumer-Based Strategy and Organizational Frontlines: Three Essays on the Role of Socially-Induced Interactions and Atmospherics on Consumer Behavior Dissertation Co-Chairs: Dr. Martin Mende and Dr. Maura L. Scott Committee Members: Dr. Anders Gustafsson, Dr. Lydia Hanks, and Dr. Charles F. Hofacker Proposal Defended: May 30, 2018 In three essays, using a consumer behavior lens, my dissertation contributes to the emerging field of consumer-based strategy and organizational frontline research (OFR). First, my research expands the impact of OFR by connecting it to consumer social responsibility. In Essay I, I examine how socially-induced communications at the organizational frontline impact shoppers prosocial behavior and store patronage. Second, in Essays II and III, my research bridges the gap between OFR and sensory marketing. These essays investigate how olfactory changes (via ambient scenting) to the servicescape affect behavioral (e.g., purchase, spending, loyalty towards the firm), physiological (e.g., visual attention) and psychological (e.g., product desire, advertisement recall, attitude toward the firm, self-control) shopper outcomes at the organizational frontline. Essay I: The Ambassador Effect: How Inducing an Ambassador Role Increases Consumers Prosocial Marketplace Behavior and Patronage Intentions. With a twenty-fold increase in plastic use in the past 50 years, and over five trillion pieces of plastic waste in the world s oceans, by 2050, projections suggest our oceans will contain more plastic than fish. Thus, encouraging shoppers to engage in prosocial marketplace behaviors, such as using reusable (vs. plastic) shopping bags, is gaining considerable interest among consumers, retailers, policy makers, and scholars. This essay proposes the ambassador effect, a novel means to prompt consumer prosocial behavioral intentions and store patronage intentions. This effect demonstrates
3 that asking a consumer to (a) engage in a prosocial behavior themselves and (b) involve another person in the same prosocial behavior increases that consumer s future prosocial behavioral intentions and store patronage intentions. The ambassador effect s impact on prosocial behavioral intentions and patronage intentions is driven by enhanced (i) warm glow and (ii) group orientation. Moreover, this research investigates the effectiveness of different retail policies (penalty- and reward-based) that are meant to encourage prosocial behavior. Specifically, I find that inducing an ambassador role mitigates negative sentiments associated with penalty-based retail policies, causing penalty-based policies to be just as effective as reward-based policies. Essay II: The Effect of (Non-)appetizing Ambient Scents on Consumers Affinity Toward Vices and Virtues. Using ambient scent at the organizational frontline has gained great momentum over the past two decades and has been shown to impact important consumer preferences as well as behaviors. This essay investigates how pleasant, appetizing ambient scents influence consumers affinity toward vice and virtuous offerings; specifically, that appetizing scents increase (decrease) consumers desire for vice (virtuous) offerings. In addition, this research proposes that pleasant, non-appetizing scents can counteract the effects of appetizing scents, not only by reducing vice preferences, but by also increasing virtuous preferences. Affinity toward vice and virtuous offerings is examined in relation to changes in shoppers behavior, the physiological and psychological processes they undergo, and the downstream impact on shoppers perception of the store. Finally, this research examines personal control as a moderator of (non-)appetizing ambient scents impact on affinity toward vice and virtuous offerings. I show the impact of (non-)appetizing ambient scents is attenuated when consumers feel a strong sense of personal control; this conditional effect is mediated by guilt. Essay III: The Effect of Gender-Based Ambient Scents: Differences in Shopper Spending Among Men and Women. Thought to be branding s final frontier, ambient scenting at the organizational frontline provides great benefits for firms as the procedure is highly influential, often well received by shoppers, and easy to implement. Another common strategy at the frontline is to segment customers based upon demographic characteristics, such as gender. In order to maximize the impact of ambient scenting and gender-based segmentation, retailers are striving to integrate the two. This essay examines how gender-based ambient scents (i.e., feminine and masculine scents) impact consumers spending and self-control when the scent is (in)congruent to the consumer s gender. For men, amount spent increases and self-control decreases when exposed to a scent that is incongruent (vs. congruent) to their gender (i.e., when men are exposed to a feminine scent). However, for women, amount spent and self-control does not differ as a function of scent. I will further examine the mechanism underlining this consumer gender gender-based scent interaction.
