1 Word Smart (verbal/linguistic skills) Write an acrostic or alliteration poem titled The Ocean. It doesn t have to rhyme. Number Smart (logic/mathematical skills) Oceans cover about 70% of the Earth's surface. s contain roughly 97% of the Earth's water supply. Research the Earth s oceans and make a table to compare interesting number facts such as area and depths. Picture Smart (visual/spatial skills) Make a collage picture or diorama of the ocean showing the ocean floor, ocean plant and animal life and the ocean surface. Body Smart (physical/kinaesthetic skills) Research an ocean living animal in terms of how it moves; starfish, jellyfish, turtles, seals and dolphins all move in different and sometimes unusual ways. Share your findings with the class. Practice moving your body in these unusual ways. Music Smart (auditory/rhythm skills) Compose a song about the ocean to a well-known nursery rhyme tune. Eg. Three black sharks Three black sharks See how they swim.. ( Three blind mice ) People Smart (interpersonal/social skills) Design a poster for a new seafood restaurant called Sharkies. Think of a slogan and a great offer to include on the poster with your picture, to ensure you have a full house on opening night. Decorate the poster with bright colours!

2 Self Smart (intrapersonal/self-awareness skills) Do a KWL showing what you Know, what you Want to know and later what you have Learned during your study of The Ocean. Nature Smart (environmental/worldly skills) There were four great oceans until the year Read /ocean/ to name each of them. On a world map colour and label the Earth s oceans. Remember (knowledge) Visit coloring/oceanlife.shtml Choose your favourite ocean animal. Read and summarise the information found. Make a facts sheet about your animal. Understand (comprehension) Do some research (use books or the internet) to record facts about sharks and whales in a Venn Diagram. This graphic organiser will help you record the similarities and differences between these two sea creatures. Apply (ability to use information) Explain why you think it might be better to be: a shark or a dolphin. Choose one and give three reasons. Analyse (ability to connect and organise information) Suppose you met a dolphin that could talk. What questions would you ask it to find out how it lives? List five questions, with the dolphin s answers and present your interview in an interesting way.

3 Evaluate (ability to make judgements and support opinions) Some people believe that a shark should be killed if it attacks a human. What do you think? Choose a side for or against and defend your position. Hold a class debate to explore the controversy. Design (ability to create something new) Imagine you have eight arms just like an octopus. Write about your day from waking up until bedtime. Draw a cartoon to help illustrate your story. Reverse Key List five sea animals that your children may never see due to them being endangered. What would you miss most about those animals if they became extinct? Disadvantages Key Some people live on the ocean. Their home is a boat. What would be the disadvantages of living on a boat? Draw some improvements you could make to the boat to make the lifestyle more comfortable. B.A.R. Key B.A.R. a fishing rod. Make it BIGGER, ADD something, REPLACE something. Draw a picture and label the parts. Variations Key How many ways can you catch an octopus? Write and illustrate your answers.

Use this list to make a Find -a-word. How have boats and ships changed over time? Predict sea travel in 100 years time. How many ways can you move a small boat through the water without oars or a motor?

Red Hat Expressing feelings Use your RED HAT to record your feelings about the sea things below: building a sandcastle eating prawns swimming with dolphins Green Hat Being creative Be Creative! You are a marine biologist and you have just discovered a sea creature that has NEVER been seen before. Draw a picture of it. Give it a name. Describe what it looks like, what it eats and where it lives. White Hat The facts Make a table with columns titled Cause and Effect and write as many cause/effect relationships as you can think of regarding littering, pollution and oil spills in our oceans. Yellow Hat The positives Imagine Scientists have discovered a way for people to live under water. List the good points about living in the ocean. Black Hat The negatives Imagine Scientists have discovered a way for people to live under water. List the bad points about living in the ocean.
