1 Welcome (Class 4 9/10/12) Homework Agenda Why History of Vocational Guidance? Review in Pairs Relationship among Social Justice Federal Legislation Wars Assessment Sputnik and STEM Commercial Tools (DOT/OOH) Women s Movement Professional Organizations (NVGA/NCDA) 1.What and special do you and like to? 2. What will hire you to them? 3. How do you find the with the power to? 1.What SKILLS (verbs) and special KNOWLEDGES (nouns) do you HAVE and like to USE? 2. What ORGANIZATIONS will hire you to USE them? 3.How do you find the PEOPLE with the power to HIRE? Frank Parsons: 1908, Parsons presented a lecture that had tremendous impact on the Career Guidance movement, systematic guidance procedures used to counsel 80 men and women who used the bureau for help. Shortly later, he died on September 26, 1908, and his major work, Choosing a Vocation, was published in May Parsons developed a framework contained a three part formulation. First, a clear understanding of yourself, aptitudes, abilities, interests, resources, limitations, and other qualities Second, a knowledge of the requirements and conditions of success, advantages and disadvantages, compensations, opportunities, and prospects in different lines of work Third, true reasoning of the relations of these two groups of facts (Parsons, 1909, p. 5, as cited in Zunker, 2002) 1
