CULTIVATING A GENERATIVE SPACE: DESIGNING THE AUDITORY AND VISUAL EXPERIENCE FOR HEALTH Title Slide Susan E. Mazer Dallas Smith Joseph Wasserman INTRODUCTION TO GENERATIVE PLACES: TIME AND SPACE "Life is like music for its own sake. We are living in an eternal now, and when we listen to music we are not listening to the past, we are not listening to the future, we are listening to an expanded present." Alan Watts 1860: Nightingale Nursing Theory Environment Observation Documentation 1
Notes on Nursing (1859) The sufferings generally considered to be inevitable and incident to the disease are very often...of something quite different of the want of fresh air, or of light, or of warmth, or of quiet, or of cleanliness, or of punctuality and care in the administration of diet, or each or of all these. Notes on Nursing (1859) Apprehension, uncertainty, waiting, expectation, fear of surprise, do a patient harm... Generative Space Gauge Transforming Space Sensory perception Coherence Responsive Therapeutic presence Interface with the environment Prognosis of care Changeable/Agile Sense of the personal Degenerative to Apprehension Uncertainty Waiting Expectation Generative Assurance Trust At peace Hope 2
(Time) Temporal vs Spatial (Space) Music and Nature Music conditions the auditory space to set the intention. Music has long been used for functionality Music Therapy studies verify its positive impact Nature is the most restorative image Biophilia: Evolutionary influence to be attracted to all that is living Mediated Nature: congruent with actual nature The patient s perception is reality. St. Charles Medical Center The patient experience includes everything within their their awareness, everything that happens to them. All perception is evidence based. 3
Within the boundaries of the healthcare institution, the sounds of illness will be the only song that is heard unless the environment is programmed for healing. Music at the Bedside Dallas Smith, Executive Vice President, Healing HealthCare Systems, Inc. Music vs. Sounds 1. Sound is an auditory event that is audible 2. The quality of the sound determines whether it is perceived as music or noise 3. Music is not generic: it is personal and subjective 4. Music has form, structure, is predictable, and exists in time. Music Therapy vs Music as Environmental Design Music Therapy: Patient Therapist model Music is a therapeutic intervention Use patient s preferred music Music as Environmental Design Treats the space, not the patient Music as an environmental intervention Mask, distract, attract Not genre based 4
Demographically driven Generationally biased No evidence that one genre over another is more or less therapeutic Uses commercialism as basis for preference Each genre can be defined by socio economic factors Hospitals include up to 4 5 generations at one time. Must be cross generational, transcend ethnic, religious, and cultural boundaries Listenable and complex enough tobe engaging, not too demanding too the listener Unfamiliar but feels familiar: not trigger past memories, experiences, emotions. Generative Spaces: Designing Nature and Music into the Environment of Care Joseph Wasserman Former CEO, Lakeland Regional Healthcare System HOW THE QUEST BEGAN... 9 and, the task is never done. Generative Spaces Person Environment Alignment Self worth reflected back from the environment Renewal of raison d être Obvious vesting in the patient and family mirrored by the environment Nature is not merely a picture or potted plant: must be systemically represented. Discussion How do we design generative spaces into the organizational culture? What can we do tomorrow? 9
