Name: Teacher: Class: Value of Date: So far, we have heard a number of different voices giving insights into the Value of Life. Think about the different ways the individuals we have studied make their points about valuing life. Write an essay in which you compare and contrast Jobs optimistic Value of Life explained in his commencement speech at Stanford University with others that we have read/watched. Learning Target: I. Your essay should: 1. Be Focused The essay contains a controlling idea. It clearly defines the Value of Life and offers evidence that helps clarify and support your points. 2. Incorporate Textual Interpretations Provide analysis of the evidence included in the essay. 3. Include Effective Word Choice Choose words to efficiently make clear points. Vary your vocabulary to avoid repetition. 4. Be Organized Paragraphs contain appropriate combinations of opinions, evidence, and analysis. 5. Demonstrate a Command of Conventions Correctly punctuated, capitalized, and proofread your essay. II. Effective Verbs for Introducing Quotations Use a variety of verbs for a more effective paper
III. Example Essay Dent 1 Stu Dent Haak English 4 1 March 2016 Loving Your Life Life is valuable. Life is precious. It is something to be cherished. Like anything of value, one must work to make it the best it can be. Despite the hardships we may experience, and the pain we might have to endure, the life we have been given matters. One s life should not be minimalized or disregarded as something trivial to be cast aside and thrown away. We have been blessed with one life, and it is our responsibility to live that life to the fullest. This means that each and every day that we are allowed to live should be lived completely, with no regrets, no what-ifs, no what-could-have-beens. The value of life is measured by the wisdom we gain through our experiences, the relationships we build and foster, and the goodness we spread in order to make the world a better place. In his commencement speech given at Stanford University in 2005, Steve Jobs relayed personal anecdotes to demonstrate what he believes is the value of life. After being fired from Apple, the company that he founded, he learned, You ve got to find what you love If you haven t found it yet, keep looking. Don t settle (Jobs). Life is too valuable to waste time on things of little importance. Find those things in life that bring you joy and hold onto them. They are what will make life worth living. When Jobs had a health scare and believed that he had terminal cancer, he came to understand a significant lesson about time. He asserted, Time is limited, so don t waste it living someone else s life (Jobs). Being true to who you are will bring your life meaning. Leave a legacy. Share yourself with those around you and your life will have purpose.
Introduction Paragraph: What is the VALUE of life? How should human life be VALUED? Define and explain this concept in this paragraph. Don t forget to include a Thesis! Body Paragraph 1 Steve Jobs: In regards to his current situation, what does Steve Jobs VALUE in life? Must include two quotes (evidence) from his speech + analysis/reflection.
Introductory Language Templates The issue of can be viewed from several different perspectives. In the tragic masterpiece Hamlet, William Shakespeare s gloomy Prince of Denmark contemplates. While confronting death can sometimes make us appreciate life more, other times it. On the other hand, the jumpers from The Bridge believed. Although some argue for, others argue for. In my view. Body Paragraph 2 Similarities: Choose to compare Steve Jobs to Brittany Maynard, Randy Pausch or Chris Gardner. What is Similar about how Steve Jobs and this individual Value Life? Must include two quotes (evidence) + analysis/reflection.
Body Paragraph 3 Differences: Choose to contrast Steve Jobs to Hamlet or the jumpers from The Bridge. What is Different about how Steve Jobs and this individual Value Life? Must include two quotes (evidence) + analysis/reflection.
