He possesses an active imagination that, at times, enhances his creativity. He values the original and tends to be somewhat visionary in his conceptualizations. He is aware of his strong emotions, and when they occur, these feelings will often influence his decision making; he is more intuitive than is characteristic of most people.

2 Confidence in Problem Solving He may be hesitant to speak up on a matter even though he has decided what action needs to be taken. He sees himself as a capable individual. He is ready to take on most problems with confidence. He is resourceful. PLANNING, ORGANIZING, AND IMPLEMENTATION SKILLS This section of the report discusses how Mr. Client goes about analyzing situations, determining an action plan, and implementing the plan. Action Orientation He is quick to become frustrated and irritated when things are delayed or going in the wrong direction. He will generally feel free to express his dissatisfaction in an open and direct fashion, perhaps without considering the effect that his words will have on the other party. The intensity and pace he applies to his work is representative of the typical person. He exhibits a balance between his desire for novelty and his comfort with routine. He has a strong drive to achieve success. He maintains a keen sense of purpose and is diligent in the pursuit of his goals. He is industrious. He has a greater willingness than most to discuss subjects, issues, and tactics in an open and frank fashion. Sometimes compliant in the face of confrontation, he can also become demanding and competitive in some circumstances. He tends to view himself as a realist who makes decisions based on rational logic rather than emotional appeal. In some instances, he may be seen as cold or uncaring, and thus perhaps unfriendly. He has little sympathy for those who are unwilling to try or who cannot produce. As optimistic as most people, he sees both opportunities for action and causes for delay in his situation; he tries to take a balanced appraisal of matters and the need to act. Conscientiousness Generally feeling competent and well-prepared, he is typically confident in his ability to deal effectively with work and life. As a person who pays attention to his conscience under most circumstances, he follows his moral code closely. In most instances, he can be counted on to carry out his assignments dependably. He is typical of the average person in his ability to carry out his assignments in a wellorganized and methodical manner. He characteristically thinks things through in a cautious and deliberate fashion before taking action. He will seldom make errors of commission, but his caution may cause him to let some windows of opportunity pass by without taking timely action on them. More reactive types of people may view him as taking too much time to decide on a matter. He is typical of most people in his ability to start difficult projects and to persevere in his efforts to complete the task at hand. He procrastinates and becomes distracted about as much as the average person. Sample Client 2

3 Openness to Possibilities and Alternatives He possesses a high degree of intellectual curiosity about a wide variety of topics. He shows an eagerness to consider new and unconventional ideas and methods. He will be viewed by others as imaginative, curious, insightful, and open-minded. However, he may tend to be idealistic and impractical. His approach to his assignments and his work environment will often reflect his aesthetic sensitivities and his appreciation for artistic expression. He is usually willing to question his own and others' assumptions and authority, but does so in a constructive and objective fashion as opposed to a rebellious or disruptive manner. He can be expected to bring new insights to situations. STYLE OF RELATING TO OTHERS Living in an interdependent culture, Mr. Client can achieve his career goals only with the help and support of others. Effective human relations skills are essential for success in his work and life. His patterns of relating to other people are discussed in this section. Outgoingness His interpersonal style combines the mannerisms of a warm and friendly variety with those of a cooler and more reserved nature. He is more of a loner than a people person. He may be comfortable being with others but will seldom actively seek people out. His preference is to be with a few people he knows well rather than with a large group of strangers. He is uncomfortable when he is in charge of a group. He usually seeks to remain in the background. He is highly self-conscious and often feels uncomfortable around others, although this may not be readily apparent to them. He lacks confidence in his social skills and is often apprehensive about others' judgments. He often feels socially inept. Accommodation He tends to believe he is better than others and will sometimes express this opinion. He runs the risk, therefore, of being seen as conceited or arrogant. He will usually balance his drive to compete with a desire to be cooperative and accommodating. While he may recognize the difficulties of others, he will seldom allow himself to be moved by their plight. He is more results-oriented than compassionate under most circumstances. Trust He is very cautious and careful around other people and often suspicious of their intentions. He is seen by most people as cynical and skeptical. Few will be able to earn his trust. He is concerned about the well-being of others, but also factors in his own needs and concerns. At times, he willingly extends a helping hand, and on other occasions, he is more self-centered and reluctant to become involved in others' problems. Sample Client 3

4 Quality of Relationships He is more open-minded and tolerant of the views of others than are most people. Direct and forthright in most situations, he is typically open, straightforward, and sincere in his dealings with others. PERSONAL STYLE Each of us has a unique "emotional signature" to our personality. In this section of the report, Mr. Client s special combination of emotional qualities is discussed. As in other sections of the report, value judgments have been avoided. Emotions are neither good nor bad. They can prove to be assets or liabilities, depending as much on the situation as on the particular emotions being experienced. Level of Emotionality He often experiences very intense feelings. He feels both positive and negative emotions far more strongly than most. He places considerable weight on how he feels about an issue. He has a relatively high tolerance for frustration and seldom takes action based on impulse. He has a good ability to keep his impulses under control. His level of energy and activity matches that of people in general, and his pace is usually moderate. He desires tranquillity and feels little need for adventure or high excitement. Some would describe him as on the boring or bland side. Patterns of Emotions He is typically apprehensive and inclined to look on the dark side of most situations. He is apt to spend inordinate amounts of time being concerned about things that have little probability of occurring. At times, this level of concern can cause indecision, or in different circumstances, lead him to act impulsively. He is often noticeably tense. He frequently experiences feelings of frustration, resentment, and anger. In addition, he may often brood over these emotions. He is also comfortable in expressing his anger and dissatisfaction in an open, direct, and forthright manner. Others will seldom be in doubt about his position on things, but may not appreciate his candor and frankness of expression. His periods of feeling discouraged are fairly typical of the experiences of most people. His emotions seldom get stuck in a down frame of mind, and he deals with discouraging events as well as the next person. Although he can cope with some pressure situations, more typically, he will feel inadequate. He may request the assistance of others when most would say he has the skills to deal with the situation on his own. Control of Emotions He views himself as a competent individual who is reasonably well-prepared to deal with work and life issues effectively. Moderately self-disciplined, he pursues his objectives with a moderate level of motivation and follow-through. He is very cautious and prudent in his approach to situations. 6 SUMMARY OF SAMPLE CLIENT S MOST DISTINCTIVE CHARACTERISTICS This report has stated several times that human characteristics have the potential to be both assets and liabilities. The trick always with truly distinctive characteristics is to recognize ways in which we can capitalize on their advantages while minimizing the effect of their disadvantages. The potential advantages and disadvantages of Mr. Client s most distinctive personality facets are presented in the following table. When His Distinctive Characteristics Work to His Advantage When His Distinctive Characteristics Work to His Disadvantage Highly self-conscious, he is unlikely to do things that will draw attention to himself or be perceived negatively by others. He is well-suited for roles where close adherence to convention and tradition is important. He is sometimes too sensitive to how he is perceived by others. At those times he may respond poorly to criticism or public scrutiny. He might work on not taking others' comments and observations so personally. Giving him some assignments where he is paired with an optimistic and outgoing partner might prove helpful in modifying this behavior. Prone to experience frustration and anger, he may serve as a good barometer of his group's morale, workload issues, and other potential problems. If he can express these feelings in appropriate and straightforward ways he could be useful in situations where candor of expression is essential. Tending to be quickly angered and easily frustrated, many may see him as irritable and disagreeable. He might want to develop a greater number of socially appropriate channels through which to express these feelings. Assigning him an active, yet calm and serene boss might help to soften his behavior. He is aesthetically sensitive, with a true appreciation of art and beauty. This might enable him to see many options for possible action. He might be able to play a role in formulating solutions to situations in which the form of the solution is as important as the substance. He may focus on form rather than substance. His ideas may be so influenced by artistic values that many will view them as impractical. He may focus on aesthetics at the expense of the bottom line. He may need assistance to recognize the need to evaluate the cost effectiveness of his aestheticallybased decisions and actions. Sample Client 6

7 He is aware of his feelings and those of others. Accepting these comfortably, he uses this information to help guide his thinking and actions. He could be a valuable resource to management in formulating decisions and action plans over a broad array of issues, where the human factor is an important ingredient. His inclination to experience and show strong feelings will cause some to question his objectivity. Environments where the expression of emotion is the norm would probably suit him well. He might also benefit from developing a greater variety of ways to express his feelings. The counsel of his supervisor or mentor might help him to achieve a more appropriate balance between reason and intuition. His wariness and suspicious nature make it difficult for others to take advantage of him. He is good at investigating the downside consequences of proposed courses of action. In situations where healthy skepticism is required, he should do well. His tendency to doubt the integrity of those around him may foster a climate of negativism. He is likely to hold on to grudges and may even attempt to get even with those he feels have wronged him. In general, it would likely be helpful if he were to develop a greater capacity to trust that others will do as they say, and to manage his cynicism at those times when they do not. He could benefit from having a constructive safety valve for his mistrust of others and a safe place to vent these feelings.
