2017 Work, Stress and Health Pre-Conference Workshop Schedule, Abstracts and Presenter Bios Morning (9am-noon) 1. Designing, Implementing and Evaluating Organizational Interventions Presenters: Karina Nielsen, PhD and Raymond Randall, PhD Abstract: In recent years, an awareness has grown that when conducting organizational interventions aimed at improving employee well-being through changing the way work is organized, designed and managed it is crucial to develop an understanding of what works for whom in which circumstances. Such an understanding requires researchers to develop their knowledge on how to plan, implement and evaluate such interventions with a view to documenting the intervention processes and the factors that may explain any improvement in health and wellbeing. The overarching aims of this session are to a) share a recent framework for how to design, implement and evaluate organizational interventions, and b) provide the participants with practical insights into the design, implementation and evaluation of organizational interventions by drawing on participants own expertise and experiences. The first half of the workshop will focus on presenting a recent framework for planning session will involve the presentation of one recent framework for developing interventions developed by Nielsen, Randall and colleagues (2010). This framework outlines five phases of designing, implementing and evaluating organizational interventions. Participants will then engage in group work discussing important tools and considerations of each phase based on their own experiences. A key part of the discussions will be to develop an understanding of how intervention activities may be integrated into existing organizational practices to ensure intervention fit. The second half of the workshop will focus on the collection, interpretation and use of process evaluation data during each phase of the framework. Evidence about the utility of different data collection methods will be presented to enable participants to formulate and evaluate specific plans for the process evaluation of interventions. The opportunities and challenges associated with the integration, interpretation and use of these data will be presented. New methods will be introduced to participants that show how process evaluation data can be integrated into intervention decision-making. Participants will then explore how process evaluation data from each stage can be used to enhance intervention implementation and reduce the risk of intervention failure. Presenter Bios: Karina Nielsen, PhD Prof. Nielsen earned her PhD in Applied Psychology from the University of Nottingham, UK. She is currently Chair of Work Psychology and Head of the Institute of Work Psychology at the University of Sheffield, UK. Her research interests include the design, implementation and

evaluation of organizational interventions aimed at improving employee health and well-being through changing the way work is organized, designed and managed. She is currently the Chair of the Research Forum of the European Academy of Occupational Health Psychology. Raymond Randall, PhD Dr. Randall earned his PhD in Applied Psychology from the University of Nottingham, UK. He is currently a senior lecturer in School of Business and Economics at Loughborough University, UK. His research interests focus on the evaluation of organizational intervention processes and how these impact on the outcomes of change. He has been involved in the design, implementation and evaluation of a range of different interventions across a variety of organizational contexts. His recent work focuses on examining the level fit between intervention practices and individual workers resources and the organizational context. He has published his research on interventions in journals such as Human Relations, Work & Stress and the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology. He is co-author of the textbook Work Psychology: Understanding Human Behaviour in the Workplace and is a registered practicing Occupational Psychologist in the UK. *****************************************************************************

2. Using Experience Sampling Methodology (ESM) to Conduct Work, Stress, and Health Research Presenters: Sabine Sonnentag, PhD and YoungAh Park, PhD Abstract Experience sampling methodology (ESM) is increasingly popular in occupational stress and health research. ESM approaches are used to capture daily (or even hourly) fluctuations of job stressors, strains, and behavior, and allow for a better understanding of within-person processes. Therefore, ESM provides an additional approach to the more often used betweenperson methods to studying occupational stress. The overarching aims of this session are to (a) review the ESM methods available to occupational health researchers and important elements to consider before designing and conducting ESM studies, and (b) provide the attendees with practical guidance for conducting and publishing their own ESM research. The first two thirds of the session will focus on the following: 1. The concept of diary research 2. A typology of research questions and goals 3. Types of designs and measurement methods, including their strengths and weaknesses 4. What to consider when designing an ESM study The last one third of the session will include: 1. A discussion of practical issues 2. A review of the overall steps of conducting ESM studies 3. Consultation time Presenter Bios: Sabine Sonnentag, PhD Dr. Sonnentag (Dr. rer. nat., TU Braunschweig, 1991) is a full professor of Work and Organizational Psychology at the University of Mannheim, Germany. Her research addresses the question how employees can achieve sustainable high job performance and remain healthy at the same time. She studies recovery from job stress, proactive work behavior, and selfregulation at work mainly in connection to individual well-being. In addition, she is interested in the role of job factors for health behavior such as eating and physical exercise. She has conducted numerous daily-survey studies and has extensive experience as associate editor and reviewer for major journals. Her research has been published in Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, among other journals. YoungAh Park, PhD Dr. Park is an Assistant Professor of the School of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Park earned her PhD in Industrial Organizational Psychology from Bowling Green State University. Her research examines psychological

mechanisms of work stress, recovery, and work-life boundary management within various temporal (e.g., daily, weekly) and social contexts (e.g., couple dyads, work groups). Her research also focuses on identifying psychosocial factors that alleviate or aggravate these psychological mechanisms. Her research has been funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and published in leading journals such as Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, Journal of Management, and Journal of Organizational Behavior. ******************************************************************************

3. Deriving and Understanding Economic Burden Metrics Presenters: Rene Pana-Cryan, PhD and Tapas K. Ray, PhD Abstract This interactive workshop will help participants understand and derive common economic metrics used to assess the consequences of work injury and illness. We will discuss advantages and limitations of these metrics, and provide information on related data sources and references. Common economic burden metrics include medical costs and productivity losses; risk-money tradeoff metrics, including the Value of a Statistical Life, expressed in dollars; and Health-adjusted Life Year metrics expressed in Quality-adjusted Life Years and Disabilityadjusted Life Years. Because different metrics consider different aspects of health and wellbeing, we will discuss dashboards or indexes that can be used to express more than one of these aspects. We will wrap up by addressing ethical and other concerns. What is useful to realize is that decisions that affect the safety and health of populations are made every day, and that under all political and social systems, resources are limited. Improving our collective understanding of economic burden metrics will help us to better prioritize decisions in order to achieve the biggest improvements in health. Presenter Bios: Rene Pana-Cryan, PhD Dr. Pana-Cryan is the Director of the Economic Research and Support Office, within the Office of the NIOSH Director (OD). She joined the NIOSH OD as a post-doctoral Prevention Effectiveness Fellow in From 2004 until late 2014, she served as a senior scientist in the Office of the Associate Director for Science. She also served as coordinator of the NIOSH Economics Program since its inception in 2005 until late 2014, and then as its manager. Currently she co-manages the new NIOSH cross-sector, Healthy Work Design and Well-being. Her interests include applying multiple standardized methods to assess the broad consequences of worker injury and illness for workers and their families, employers, and society. She is also interested in improving the understanding of the impact of economic factors on the incidence and severity of worker injury, illness, and well-being. Rene received a BS in Plant Science from University of Thessaloniki, Greece, a BS in Accounting and Finance from Deree College, Greece, and an MS and PhD in Food and Resource Economics from the University of Florida. Tapas K. Ray, PhD Dr. Ray is as an economist in the Economic Research and Support Office, within the Office of the NIOSH Director. He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Connecticut and joined NIOSH as a post-doctoral Prevention Effectiveness Fellow in Tapas has published in the fields of environmental, health, and regulatory economics. His current research interests

include health-related quality of life, worker well-being, the economics of job stress, and nonstandard employment arrangements. He currently serves as an assistant coordinator of the new NIOSH cross-sector, Healthy Work Design and Well-being. Outside NIOSH, Tapas is a level B professor of Economics at Miami University. *************************************************************************************

5. Understanding Worker Health with Objective Measures: Selection, Implementation, and Practical Considerations Presenters: Dan Ganster, PhD and Tori L. Crain, PhD Abstract Improved feasibility of objective physiological measurement, as well as the growth in interest in neuroscience, has spurred an uptick in the use of physiological markers in organizational science and practice over the last decade. At times, this use does not seem well-informed by the underlying empirical and theoretical literature in the basic sciences associated with the measures. Thus, we will provide participants with a) a foundational understanding of how to choose appropriate physiological measures given the research question, b) make known the array of potential physiological measures that can be utilized (e.g., cortisol, actigraphic sleep, heart rate variability, waist-to-hip ratio, c-reactive protein), and c) provide practical recommendations for working with these objective indicators. Our intent is not to get too deep into the technical protocols involved in obtaining physiological measures, given the vast number of potential measures, but rather to provide guidance for how one chooses and implements measures, while also pointing participants to best-practice resources for acquiring more info about a specific measure s protocol. The session will be largely interactive, with participants generating ideas for future data collections and trouble-shooting potential issues that could arise. Presenter Bios: Dan Ganster, PhD Daniel C. Ganster is the Partnership for Excellence Professor of Management in the College of Business at Colorado State University. He earned his PhD at Purdue, and previously was on the faculty at the University of Arkansas and the University of Nebraska. He has served as the department chair for Management at both the University of Arkansas and Colorado State, where he also served as the Senior Associate Dean for Research and Administration. His research broadly concerns the impact of work life experiences on the mental and physical wellbeing of organizational members. His research has been funded by NIMH and NIOSH and has been published in journals such as Journal of Applied Psychology, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management, and Journal of Behavioral Medicine. Tori L. Crain, PhD Tori L. Crain is an assistant professor in the Industrial/Organizational Psychology Program and Occupational Health Psychology Concentration at Colorado State University.
