4 Profile Why choose Psychology? Alexandra Diaconu I did my placement at Hillingdon Action Group for Addiction Management, where my responsibilities included shadowing Criminal Justice outreach, keyworking sessions, and street outreach (engaging drug users and street drinkers). The experience was engaging, challenging and rewarding. I would highly recommend the placement programme to everybody, as it stimulates development on so many different levels. Psychology is often defined as the study of behaviour and of the mind. Psychologists theorise and research to investigate a diverse range of topics including: The relationship between the brain, behaviour and subjective experience Human development The influence of other people on the individual s thoughts, feelings and behaviour Psychological disorders and their treatment The impact of culture on the individual s behaviour and subjective experience Differences between people in terms of their personality and intelligence People s ability to acquire, organise, remember and use knowledge to guide their behaviour Why choose Psychology at Brunel? Our courses emphasise the everyday significance of psychology, encouraging you to explore the relationship between theory and practice through academic study and on work placements. You will be offered two work placements, giving you the opportunity to gain varied experience across psychological and clinical environments. Recent placements include the Institute of Psychiatry, Royal Free Hospital and Holloway Prison. Resource-wise we are second to none. We have a full range of laboratory and technical facilities including computing labs, experimental testing cubicles, an EEG lab, an eye-tracking lab and an extensive psychometric test library. Our strong research culture enhances our teaching with expertise in areas such as neuropsychology, developmental, social, cognitive and evolutionary psychology, and mental illness. In your third year you can tailor the course to your own interests. We offer unique options including Evolutionary Psychology, Cross Cultural Psychology and Psychology of Aesthetics. As well as our Psychology BSc course we also offer specialist Joint Honours programmes giving you the chance to explore and connect your interests: Psychology and Sociology BSc Psychology and Anthropology BSc 4
5 Psychology and Anthropology BSc Anthropology at Brunel is an outward-looking and cosmopolitan social science, focusing on the documentation and explanation of cultural diversity. If you are curious about your own and other societies, want to understand the social processes and meanings in the world around you and are interested in how they relate to psychological studies, you will find this degree particularly rewarding. A rigorous training in a range of methodologies and research skills appropriate to psychology and anthropology forms the backbone of the course. Psychology and Sociology BSc Sociologists are concerned with developing theories that explain the changing nature of social behaviour in their own and other societies. They ask questions like what is society? How and why is it changing? What are the opportunities for future change and development? One of the central themes of sociology at Brunel is the development of techno-cultural phenomena such as new communications technology and environmental issues straddling traditional distinctions between the social, the natural, the technical and the material. Specific interests of Brunel sociologists include the social construction of technology, social theory, contemporary social structure, celebrity culture, the influence of the media, environmental risk, media regulation, crime and addiction, urban spaces, and comedy cultures. These are reflected in your options at Year 3. This course combines the wide structural insights of sociology with the rigorous techniques of psychology to give you a broad intellectual grounding in all aspects of human behaviour. 5

8 Profile How we teach Alexzina Brooks (Psychology BSc) When I was looking at different universities, Brunel stood out to me. I thought the Psychology course included a wide range of interesting modules from Brain and Cognition, to Social Psychology. Additionally, the campus is very lively and there are numerous societies and sports clubs to join. Having the option to do two placements is very practical as I can grasp what I am good at and what I enjoy. I believe having work experience will be a great asset when looking for jobs after graduation. Our emphasis is on the real-life significance of psychology and we encourage you to explore the relationship between the practical and theoretical aspects of the subject. You will learn in lectures and seminars, and in the lab. You ll use information technology to gain important skills in areas such as experimental psychology and psychophysics as you increasingly specialise in your own particular area of interest. Getting ready for work As a Brunel Psychology graduate (with a second class degree or above) you qualify for chartered membership of the British Psychological Society an essential entry qualification if you decide to go on to postgraduate professional training in psychology. During your time with us our award-winning careers service will help you find work placements from our wide range of connections. We ll make sure you gain valuable experience so you can develop a stand-out CV. 8
