Kirkland has four core practice areas: Corporate: We work on sophisticated transactions, including in the areas of private equity, M&A, debt finance, capital markets, tax and real estate. Intellectual Property: We re known for our complex patent litigation, copyright, trademark, Internet and advertising practices. Litigation: We take on the most complex and challenging cases, and our success rate at trial is among the best in the country. Restructuring: We represent some of the world s largest companies and key stakeholders in high-profile, complicated restructurings. Our attorneys work together as multidisciplinary teams to provide innovative solutions and superior service for our multinational clients. Life at Kirkland: Close Colleagues Kirkland attorneys genuinely care about the individuals on their teams, and we rely on one another to achieve our goals. I have developed unexpectedly strong bonds with my colleagues, and I think the organic nature of the open assignment system has played a large part. For instance, I was a member of a team handling a complex, global matter with an extremely compressed timeline. The deal team and our client contacts built strong connections with one another over the course of several intense weeks of in-person negotiations. When the deal finally closed, it was strangely bittersweet. We had all bonded for a common goal and worked hard together to successfully achieve it and then it was suddenly over. This particular deal had closed a few days before the Super Bowl and, because I don t think any of us wanted to simply disband so abruptly, the senior partner had the Kirkland team over to his house to watch the game and grill steaks from the best butcher shop in Brooklyn. The lesson I took away was that the relationships you forge (professional and personal) can be just as meaningful as the success of any particular matter. In terms of knowledge and experience, I am leaps and bounds ahead of my peers at other firms. As a second-year, I worked on a matter in which we represented a creditor in the City of Detroit s Chapter 9 bankruptcy case. That representation demonstrates the unique types of matters Kirkland takes on. As a junior associate, I was often the closest to the documents and legal research at issue, and the partners looked to me to speak up during negotiations when something wasn t right. 11 My Perspective: Alexandra Schwarzman Kirkland attorneys are supportive and friendly, regardless of level or practice group. There s a fantastic team attitude here, and I m as comfortable asking a partner for advice as I am a fellow associate. I ve also developed great friendships here with attorneys across multiple practice groups. I ve stayed particularly good friends with my colleagues from the Summer Program. It s a fantastic feeling to work with people whom I consider close friends. I ve formed close friendships with my colleagues at Kirkland. 11

Our formal, practice-specific training programs take place year-round and feature lectures, workshops, mock trials, boardroom exercises and other presentations led by senior attorneys. To round out your training, Kirkland offers frequent in-house professional development programming, including workshops focusing on management and leadership skills and business development. You ll also benefit from informal training and development as you work closely with senior associates, partners and clients on sophisticated matters. You ll be given hands-on work experience and significant responsibility from your first days at Kirkland. Life at Kirkland: Building Confidence The learning opportunities at Kirkland are great especially if you re willing to put yourself outside your comfort zone. In college, I was a computer science major with a quiet reputation, which I held on to through law school. My experiences at Kirkland helped me to gain confidence to speak up. Kirkland s training programs helped instill this confidence. Kirkland s litigation training program, the Kirkland Institute for Trial Advocacy, is an interactive experience that helped boost my communication skills. The program made me feel comfortable talking to any number of people, at any level, anytime, anywhere, without feeling nervous. I know that with this training, and with the mentorship of the partners I work with, I am prepared to handle any aspect of any litigation matter that comes my way. 15 My Perspective: Justin Singh When I was a first-year, I appreciated the fact that the attorneys I worked with trusted me to complete assignments independently, while sharing their expertise and guidance to help me grow as a lawyer. They gave me meaningful responsibility, and they showed me how my tasks fit into the bigger picture of the case and within the Firm as a whole.
