FAMILY and SOCIAL HEALTH To understand that feeling comfortable about oneself and other people, being able to meet the demands of life and having the capacity to make sound health choices are basic characteristics which typify healthy emotional attitudes and behavior. A. Individual Characteristics: The student will be able to identify certain qualities and characteristics that make individuals special and unique. 1. Provide examples to show how individuals are unique (e.g. special skills). 2. Name personal qualities and characteristics (e.g. honesty, loyal, kindness). 3. Identify desirable traits and characteristics (e.g. responsible, trustworthy). 4. Realize that personal characteristics and certain qualities make people unique and special. B. Effect of Behavior on Others: The student will recognize ways in which a person's behavior affects the health and well-being of others. 1. List ways of making friends. 2. Give examples of when it is important to share with others. 3. Explain the importance of respecting the rights and differences of others. 4. Recognize that each person has a unique pattern and rate of growth. 3. Understand that everyone has unique physical features. B. Senses: The student understands how one's senses gather information and influence how we behave and feel. 1. Identify the basic senses. 2. Explain how we learn through our senses. 3. Care of the Body: The student will understand that each individual has a certain responsibility for his/her personal health care. 1. Understand the importance of developing healthy personal habits of hygiene at home and at school (e.g. brushing teeth, washing hands before eating or after toileting, using a tissue, covering a cough etc.) D. Dental Health: The student will understand that the condition of the teeth and gums affect one's speech, appearance and nutritional status. 1. Understand good dental health practices. 2. Identify the structure and function of the teeth. 3. Describe the value of fluoride treatments, brushing and seeing a dentist regularly. 4. Explain how dental problems may affect one s appearance and social relationships. 5. Formulate a plan for proper care of teeth. III. NUTRITION The student will understand the relationship between proper nutrition and one's health, physical and mental performance. A. Importance of Proper Nutrition: The student will understand that nutrition is important in the everyday functioning of an individual. 1. Identify purposes of food (e.g. energy, growth, strong muscles, strong bones and teeth etc.). 2. Discuss the importance of eating three meals a day. 3. Explain why breakfast is such an important meal. 4
5 B. Role of Nutrition: The student will realize that individuals throughout life require the same basic nutrients, but in varying amounts. 1. Classify foods into the four food groups. 2. Identify appropriate number of daily servings they should eat from each group. 3. Identify major nutrients in each of the four food groups. 4. Identify and choose nutritious snacks. 5. Identify snacks that have little or no nutritional value. C. Nutrition and Wellness: The student will understand that proper nutrition is a significant factor in promoting health and preventing disease. 1. Discuss the connection between eating right, exercising and preventing health problems. 2. Explain why it is important to begin eating a healthy diet at a young age. 3. Explain that eating foods high in sugar may lead to dental cavities. IV. PERSONAL HEALTH and PHYSICAL ACTIVITY The student understands the relationship between fitness and wellness and realizes that proper levels of activity and rest contribute to overall fitness. A. Benefits of Activity: The student understands that appropriate types of activity contribute to the total health of the individual. 1. List the benefits of play and physical activity (e.g. making friends, feeling stronger, etc.). 2. Distinguish between good fitness activities and poor ones. 3. Identify the characteristics of a fit and unfit individual. B. Exercise and Rest: The student understands that a proper balance of exercise and rest contributes to high levels of fitness. 1. Tell how adequate rest and sleep affect performance and appearance. 2. Describe how good fitness affects posture, appearance, self-esteem and performance. C. INJURY PREVENTION and SAFETY The student will understand that the potential for accident and harm exists everywhere in the environment. A. Safety Rules: The student understands rules are made to keep one safe at home, school and in our community. 1. Know and follow safety rules for a seatbelt, bike, playground, and pedestrian. 2. Know and follow the safety plan for fire, evacuation, lock down at home and at school. 3. Identify actions that can prevent household accidents. 4. Discus basic first aid and caring for simple injuries. 5
6 VI. ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, and OTHER DRUGS The student will understand that all chemical substances produce some affect on the body and have potential to be abused. A. Effects of drugs: The student will understand that a drug is any substance which, when taken into the body, makes it work differently. 1. Recognize that all drugs have an affect on the way the body works. 2. Explain, that role of medicines. 3. Describe the nature and affects of poisonous substances. 4. Cite ways in which one should show respect for drugs (e.g. proper use, correct amounts etc.). B. Alcohol, Caffeine, Tobacco: The student will realize that alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine are drugs which are commonly used in our society. 1. Explain how and why tobacco is harmful to one's health. 2. Describes the affect of alcohol on the body and mind. 3. Describes the affect of caffeine on the body. VII. COMMMUNICABLE and CHRONIC DISEASE To understand that certain factors contribute to infection, illness and disease, and that many may be prevented or controlled by a variety of measures. A. Factors Causing Illness: The student recognizes factors which contribute to illness, infection, disease, and well being. 1. Distinguish between sickness and health. 2. Realize that some, not all, illnesses are contagious. 3. Name some childhood diseases. 4. Identify some factors which contribute to disease and infection. B. Protecting Self: The student will recognize ways to minimize infection, sickness, disease and improve one s well being. 1. Explain the difference between a communicable and non-communicable illness. 2. Cite ways in which diseases can be transmitted. 3. Realize that skin is a protective barrier. 4. Importance of Proper Nutrition: The student will understand that nutrition is important in everyday functioning of an individual. 1. Identify purposes of food (e.g. energy, growth, strong muscles, strong bones, and teeth etc.). 2. Discuss the importance of eating three meals a day. 3. Explain why breakfast is such an important meal. B. Role of Nutrients: The students will realize that individuals throughout life require the same basic nutrients, but in varying amounts. 1. Classify foods into four food groups. 2. Identify appropriate number of daily servings they should eat from each group. 3. Identify major nutrients in each of the four food groups. 4. Identify and choose nutritious snacks. 5. Identify snacks that have little or no nutritional value. C. ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, and OTHER DRUGS The student will understand that all chemical substances produce some affect on the body and have potential to be abused. A. Effects of Drugs: The student will understand that a drug is any substance which, when taken into the body, makes it work differently. 1. Recognize that all drugs have an affect on the way the body works. 2. Describe the nature and affects of poisonous substances. 3. Explain the role of medicines. 4. Cite ways in which one should show respect for drugs (e.g. proper use, correct amounts etc.) B. Alcohol, Caffeine, Tobacco: The student will realize that alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine are drugs which are commonly used in our society. 1. Explain how and why tobacco is harmful to one s health. 2. Describe the affect of alcohol on the body and mind. 3. Describe the affect of caffeine on the body. 4. Discuss ways one can say no to drugs. VII. COMMUNICABLE and CHRONIC DISEASE To understand that certain factors contribute to infection, illness and disease, and that many may be prevented or controlled by a variety of measures. A.
