1 Nancy McMillan APRN, CHPN Wake County Human Service Burnout Etiology Reactional: response to work or environmental issues Conflict within the work setting Conflicts with managers/co-workers o Chaotic or unpredictable management o Not feeling supported 1

Inadequate work conditions: Not having the proper working equipment to do required work Constantly being asked to do more with less, double shifts Isolation Chronology: gradually over time Outcome: Decreased empathic response Withdrawal May leave position or transfer Compassion Fatigue Etiology: Relational, contacts we have with clients Caring for those suffering Inability to change course of outcomes Inability to change painful scenarios Overwhelming disasters Chronology: acute or chronic onset Compassion Fatigue (cont.) Outcomes: Intensify work try harder Imbalance of empathy Loss of objectivity Vicarious trauma Diminished performance, judgment, hopelessness May leave position 2

13 Post Traumatic Growth Some people get stronger and happier after a traumatic event. They seem to unlock their life and live with fewer regrets Somehow a traumatic event can unlock the ability to live a life without regret My priorities have changed I feel closer to my friends and family I understand myself better, I know who I am I have a new sense of meaning and purpose I am better able to focus on my goals and dreams How can we make this happen intentionally? Better yet, how can we make this happen without trauma? If we stay active, moving about, we decrease stress and heal faster The best thing you can do for your physical health is NOT SIT STILL 13
14 Research shows FOCUS and WILLPOWER are like muscles and get better the more they are exercised Tiny challenges daily (5 things) Living mindfully rather than mindlessly Find a window to look outside Looking at babies, human or animal This elicits compassion and displays our ability to show love and curiosity 14
