You are such a Squiggle! How Personalities Impact the Workplace Course Objective By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to identify their dominant personality traits and will learn how to adapt their communication style to accommodate the dominant traits of others. History of the Personality Personality typing has been used for over 2500 years. Why do we type? Understanding a person s type helps us to communicate more effectively, understand different perspectives, understand ourselves, helps us make sense of our world, and assists in relationships for those who have a more difficult time understanding people and personalities. (Berens, 2000). Popular personality theories Five Factor Theory PEN Model Carl Jung 16 basic type Myers-Briggs Kiersey Temperment Psychogeometrics Enneagram Class Exercise Sign your name: Now sign your name with your opposite hand: What is your shape? Refer to the following shapes. Select the shape you feel best describes you as a person. Place a number 1 next to that shape. Continue to list the shapes from most descriptive (1) to least descriptive (5). 1
Audio: Psychogeometrics Personality Typing by Shape (Dr. Susan Dellinger) Left Hemisphere If you selected the box, triangle or rectangle, you have chosen a linear shape. Left brain thinkers who are logical and organized in their approaches to life, typically choose linear shapes. Right Hemisphere If you selected the circle or the squiggle you would typically be categorized as a right brain thinker and would be more creative and intuitive in your decisions and outlook on life. 5 Personal Development Goal Preparing to Communicate 1. What do you perceive to be the dominant shape of the other? 2. How will you prepare the environment to have a positive discussion? 3. How will you adapt your communication style in order to respect the personality of the other? 4. How will you explain how you perceive or feel about the situation? 4
Example 1. What do think is the dominant shape of the other? Squiggle 2. How will you prepare the environment to have a positive discussion with the other? I will schedule a time to in a conference room. I ll be sure to sit facing the window so the Squiggle will not be distracted or tempted to look outside during our conversation. 3. How will you adapt your communication style in order to respect the personality of the other? I will first recall the situation so the Squiggle remembers the incident. (Yesterday he was talking on the phone to his friend about their weekend plans). I will tell him why his behavior frustrated me. (I was on an important call and could not hear the conversation due to the Squiggle talking so loudly). 4. How will you explain how you perceive or feel about the situation? I will explain that it is important to understand how others prefer to work and that because several people share a workspace it is important to respect the environment. I will suggest that if the calls are personal and lengthy, it is best to take the call on his cell phone and step outside or away from the shared workspace. 5
Personality and the Group Effective groups consist of team members who utilize their personality strengths to help the team achieve their goals. Imagine if a team consisted entirely of one personality shape. Let s plan the company picnic too! So what is the plan? We will follow MY plan I don t know what plan to choose! Shape Strengths List the contributions each shape brings to a team. 6
Conclusion Left Right Personality traits are one of many attributes that make up our self. We should be proud of our dominant traits and recognize that our strengths help create a better understand and make sense of our surroundings. Remember! We possess all the personality traits and therefore are capable of adapting our behavior to better fit the situation or person we are communicating to. The ability to communicate in a manner that supports the other s dominant personality style shows respect to the other. (And when we demonstrate support to others they are more willing to support us and respect our preferred communication style!) Sharing Your Personality Style With the materials provided, create a visual reminder to others of your preferred personality shape. Thank you for attending! 7
