1 Drexel University Annual Report General Highlights The Department of Psychology had a strong year in 2012 with respect to research, teaching, and service. A few highlights of the year include: 177 scientific and professional presentations at international, national, and regional conferences 84 publications of articles, chapters, and books (calendar year 2012) $2,253,940 in research grant funding (FY 2012 costs only) Over 600 applicants for 10 slots in the clinical doctoral training program Significant collaboration between faculty and students, from undergraduate to masters to doctoral programs Admission of the second cohort of students into the new doctoral training program in Applied Cognitive and Brain Sciences Dr. Don Bersoff, Professor of Psychology and Law, was elected President of the American Psychological Association and retired from Drexel University Dr. Ludo Scheffer initiated and provided seed-funding for the creation of an Undergraduate Psychology Research Fund (UPRF), the purpose of which is to promote participation of psychology majors in research activities by providing supporting funding for conference participation. Additional funding support is provided by the Department, ongoing commitment by Scheffer, and fundraising though other sources. Students Stephanie Goldstein and Alyssa Matteucci were the first recipients of awards from the Fund. Dr. Kirk Heilbrun stepped down as Department Head after serving 14 years in that role, and Dr. James Herbert assumed the position as the new Department Head after serving for 7 years as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Dr. David DeMatteo assumed the role of Director of the JD/PhD program in law and psychology, with Dr. Naomi Goldstein assuming the role of Co-Director Dr. Maria Schultheis replaced Dr. Evan Forman as Director of the Clinical Psychology PhD program Dr. Forman assumed the new role of Director of Graduate Studies We welcomed to the faculty Drs. Dorothy Charbonnier, Charles Williams, and Karol Osipowicz as new Teaching Assistant Professors

2 Hosted Events (panel discussions, speakers, workshops, readings) Dr. Ludo Scheffer organized a D-3 titled The Myth and Madness of Edgar Alan Poe. The title refers to a ballet by Christopher Fleming, former principal dancer of the New York City Ballet, and Artistic Director of ballet Fleming, a community dance organization in Philadelphia. The D-3 preceded 3 performances of the ballet at Mandell theater. In the D-3 three faculty members (Kirk Heilbrun, Doreen Alvarez Saar, and Fred Siegel) examined the relationship between art and madness from a psychological, literature, and theater perspective, Following the brief presentations faculty and students in small groups discussed the relationship between art and madness. The event concluded with raffling off 10 tickets to the ballet for 10 students (March 2012). Dr. Marlin Killen served on the planning committee for a day-long hosted event, Evidence-Based Learning - Creating a Culture of Assessment at Drexel University (August 7, 2012). Civic Engagement/Community Outreach Dr. Douglas L. Chute, served on the Board of Brain Injury Services (BIS) of Muskoka-Simcoe in Canada, a service he helped establish. BIS is a provincially funded brain injury rehabilitation program providing community-based services in Ontario.
