Hackensack University Medical Center provided $256,164,379 in uncompensated care in Uncompensated care includes charity and bad debt.
4 COMMUNITY HEALTH BENEFITS HACKENSACK UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER S HEALTH AWARENESS REGIONAL PROGRAM (HARP) IS A WELLNESS AND PREVENTION PROGRAM DESIGNED TO EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY ABOUT HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHOICES. HARP PROVIDED MANY BENEFITS INCLUDING: BOARD OF HEALTH CONTRACTS HARP provides services to 29 Bergen County municipalities through Board of Health contracts. Towns served included: Bergenfield, Carlstadt, Cresskill, Demarest, Dumont, East Rutherford, Elmwood Park, Emerson, Englewood Cliffs, Fair Lawn, Fairview, Fort Lee, Garfield, Hackensack, Harrington Park, Leonia, Mahwah, Montvale, New Milford, Palisades Park, Ridgefield, Ridgefield Park, River Edge, River Vale, Saddle Brook, South Hackensack, Tenafly, Washington Township, and Wallington. HEALTH PROMOTION HARP contracts with 29 communities for health promotion services. Areas of focus include but are not limited to: alcohol abuse, tobacco education, nutrition, injury control, physical fitness and exercise, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, and STD awareness. Three hundred and thirty-five programs were presented to 14,590 community members. FLU IMMUNIZATION HARP provided 1,404 flu immunizations and collaborated with contracting municipalities to achieve maximum immunization rates to their residents. Services included: health promotion, public health, nursing supervision, and public health nursing. Other services included: child health conferences, adult health conferences, school immunization audits, community needs assessments, communicable disease reporting and follow-up, Tuberculin skin testing, preventive screenings, and health promotion. HARP participated in numerous health fairs and town days throughout Health education and screenings in some towns included: prostate, melanoma, breast, diabetes risk assessment, as well as AHA stroke risk and body mass index assessment. In 2006, HARP offered health education programs in Spanish provided by a bilingual health educator as well as educational materials in Korean. CORPORATE SERVICES HARP presents lectures, programs, and screenings for corporations, locally and nationally, in an effort to assist employees to become informed about their health and adopt healthier lifestyles. These services include health fairs, educational lectures, screenings, courses on nutrition, stress management, and tobacco education. HARP also provides cardio-pulmonary and first-aid classes, in addition to flu immunizations, Blood Born Pathogen Education, Hepatitis and Tetanus/Diphtheria, Tuberculosis health education and testing, and corporate health contracts. HARP provides these services to corporations in Bergen, Hudson, and Morris counties in New Jersey, and to a variety of other sites across the nation. HARP also provides corporate nursing services to assist companies with their worker s compensation programs. This encompasses treatment education and coordination between the injured employees, physicians, and insurance companies.
