2 AOSpine Principles Course Degeneration 3 Welcome to Birmingham Dear colleagues, On behalf of AOSpine UK we would like to welcome you to the AOSpine Principles course in Birmingham, UK. Degenerative spinal conditions represent one of the most frequent domains of spinal pathology, which can affect patients of any age. Appropriate management can reduce the morbidity and improve significantly the life quality of these patients. This course is aimed at trainees in both specialities with interest in mastering the key concepts in the evaluation and management of degenerative spinal problems. The participants will have the opportunity to interact with exceptional and very experienced faculty - both with neurosurgical and orthopedic background. Theoretical knowledge will be supplemented with hands-on training in the use of implants and techniques open and computer navigation guided to facilitate the operative management of degenerative spinal problems. Each session of this event will be moderator driven, so that the discussions are largely interactive. The success of the course relies on you - the participants taking an active part in the lectures, discussions and practical sessions. We will have time allocated for participants to bring your cases for discussion in a friendly open forum. Looking forward to your active participation. This indicates that the program, content, and objectives have been developed based on the Curriculum framework and that the event meets the implementation criteria defined by the AOSpine Education Commission (AOSEC). For more information, visit Course description In addition to simple decompression techniques the manage-ment of degenerative spinal problems frequently implies use of spinal instrumentation. The course will focus on surgical advances with review of classical open as well as minimally invasive techniques. A special lecture will be dedicated to spinal navigation and its role in modern spinal surgery. This educational event, taught in a modular format, will comprise of lectures, case-based discussions and hands-on practical exercises on artificial bones with ample time for debates between faculty and participants. There will be numerous opportunities to ask questions, to raise controversies and to help the program be more interactive and fruitful to all of us. Target participants This course is designed for neurosurgical and orthopedic trainees and young consultants with up to three years experience in the management of patients with degenerative spinal problems. It will supplement your existing knowledge with improvement of your diagnostic, investigational and operative skills. Learning objectives After the event, participants will be able to: Diagnose the patients with degenerative spinal problems and order appropriate imaging studies based on the history and physical examination findings Select operative and non-operative interventions based on the best available evidence and on the natural history Safely place a screw laterally in the posterior cervical spine using anatomical landmarks and perform an anterior cervical discectomy Safely place pedicle screws in the thoracic and lumbar spine and sacrum using anatomical landmarks and navigation Anticipate, prevent, diagnose and manage surgical complications Get to know state-of-the art computer navigation in spine surgery and describe the benefits and limits of spinal navigation Apply the principles of minimally invasive spinal surgery Recognize and efficiently manage patients with cauda equina syndrome Identify dilemmas in spine surgery as a junior consultant
