Outline Introduction Research questions Method Findings FindMyApps prototype Further development
Introduction Person-centred interventions Unmet needs meaningful activities Insufficient support for self-management Current policy
What is known about people with dementia and touch screen technology? - User-friendly and valuable; - Increasement of self-confidence and engagement in daytime activities; - Involvement in society. (Riley et al., 2009, Astell et al., 2010, Upton et al., 2011, Meiland et al., 2012, Pringle and Somerville, 2013, Leuty et al., 2013, Nijhof et al., 2013, Lim et al., 2013, Groenewoud and de Lange, 2014, Nordheim et al, 2014; Kerkhof et al., 2015; Astell et al, 2016)
Reflections Careful consideration is required to select usable apps Support is needed to learn how to use the touch screen and its apps
The person-centred tablet programme consists off: - A tool to match individual needs, wishes and abilities of people with dementia to features of apps so that tailores apps can be selected, see Figure 1. - A training for people with dementia to learn how to use the tablet. - A training for professionals, informal carers (including volunteers) to support people with dementia in using the tablet (Kerkhof et al, 2016).
FindMyApps tool and training User studies: focus groups (Kerkhof et al, 2017) Design & Development selection tool: Usertests Systematic literature review: effective coaching intervention FindMy Apps Feasibility study RCT
FindMyApps (FMA) selection tool Sets of user and system requirements of apps (filters) Possible apps Carer Most usable apps Person with mild dementia 65% 77% 89%

Research question How to develop an interactive selection tool that matches individual needs, wishes and abilities of persons with mild dementia in the area of self-management and meaningful activities (user-profile) to important features of apps (selection criteria)?
Research aim The development of a selection tool that meets the needs, wishes and abilities of potential end users (people with mild dementia and informal carers) and other important stakeholders (professionals, experts in dementia, researchers, ICT developers and designers).
Content FMA selection tool Front-end (looks like). Back-end consist of: User-environment; Administration environment; Reporting environment.
Principles FMA development Participatory design; Person-centered; Self-learning; Iterative.
FindMyApps tool and training User studies: focus groups (Kerkhof et al, 2017) Design & Development selection tool: Usertests Systematic literature review: effective coaching intervention FindMy Apps Feasibility study RCT
User requirement (1)
User requirements (2)
Criteria category Interaction Feedback Description Assessment for dementia friendly apps Intuitive use: format of bottons Visual and audio feedback Esthetic design Text size Contrasts and background Assessment dementia friendly apps App design Intuitive use: recognizable and not complex Instructions or tutorial Customatization Obstacles Age appropriateness Language Advertising or light version Not childisch
User profile Personal settings: Visual and language problems: less text and many pictures Visual problems: big letter sizes Language problems: available in Dutch Recognition problems: photo s instead of illustrations or pictograms Skill problems: type of gesture only by tapping or clicking Skill problems: presents of instructions or tutorial
Methods(1) - Two iterations: 1. Phase 1: Gathering data for design 2. Phase 2: Creating mock-ups 3. Phase 3: Usability tests - Participatory design - Qualitative research methods Usability tests Gathering data design Mock-ups
Methods (2) Usability tests with persons with dementia (n=8), informal carers (n=8) and professionals (n=2). Scenario testing/ assignments Three step test interview (TSTI) 1. Think aloud; 2. Focused interview; 3. Semi structured interview.
Data analysis 1. Participant characteristics 2. Video-taped interviews 3. Detailed descriptions of output scenario s 4. Observed participants reported in field notes Deductive content analysis based on framework analysis (Ritchie and Spencer, 1994) Three quality levels of design: system quality; content quality and service quality (Nijland, 2011).
Findings Usability tests Gathering data design Mock-ups Quality Iterations 1 & 2 System Content Service With regard to an userfriendly navigation within FindMyApps e.g.: - to select apps for an (sub)activity; - to present the apps and to download; - for operating personal settings. With regard to an understandable and meaningful content e.g.: - what are the main activities and how to devide them into subactivities? - what is the balance between meeting the variety of needs of individuals and simplicity? With regard to an adequately provided service e.g.: - Responsiveness of buttons and touch space.
Additional user tests
Prototype FMA

Further development Feasibility study: - Suitability of parameters and measurements instruments; - Feasibility and user satisfaction of FMA; - Factors influencing the effect and implementation; - Feasibility of research protocol for RCT.
Take home message Pleasure and enjoyment Connection and belonging Autonomy and personal identity (Phinney et al., 2007).
