1 1800 Alta Vista Ottawa, ON K1G 4J5 T F Important Information Regarding Platelets Apheresis, LR Product Update Customer Letter # Dear Colleague: This letter pertains to: Platelets Apheresis, LR Transfusion Instructions Label Canadian Blood Services (CBS) is implementing new automated technology for collecting Platelets Apheresis, LR. Platelets Apheresis, LR will be supplied in either one container, or where the product volume exceeds 400mL and/or the platelet yield is greater than 5x10 11 /unit, in two connected containers. The provision of Platelets Apheresis, LR in two containers improves platelet viability during storage by permitting more surface area for gas exchange. From a licensing perspective, Canadian Blood Services considers platelets stored in two bags as one product/unit. For transfusion of the entire unit, the platelets stored in two containers should be pooled into the primary container immediately prior to transfusion, as indicated on the transfusion instruction label that is adhered to the secondary container. Canadian Blood Services sites will apply this label (as shown) with instructions for the product to be pooled prior to transfusion. However, should the transfusion facility decide to issue the product in each container separately, internal procedures that include instructions to allow for identification of the separated containers should be followed.
