English Group Project Bibliographies Compiled Ian Hartman, Austin Paragas, Kristina Slobodyan, Ben Grobeman, Rishi Dutt Ian Hartman Marhefka, Julie King,R.N., M.S.N. "Sleep Deprivation: Consequences for Students." Journal of Psychosocial Nursing & Mental Health Services 49.9 (2011): ProQuest. Web. 22 Feb This article provides most of the essential knowledge regarding our sleep patterns and how sleep can affect our daily performance. In this article the author makes numerous points about how it isn t about the duration of time spent asleep, but more about the quality of our sleep. She points out that there are multiple factors, such as stress and shifts in our natural cycle, which can cause our bodies to not be able to maintain a regular sleep pattern. Mainly, this article helps me understand how sleep deprivation affects a student s mental capacity and capabilities without enough sleep. This article is well written and contains numerous citations to other sources that help inform the reader about the content. This article is also peer-reviewed, helping reinforce the legitimacy of the information within. Vernon-Sparks, Lisa. Sleep on it. Providence Journal. Lifebeat pg.1. 1 Nov Print. This newspaper article helps reinforce most of the information found within the first article as well as building upon the idea with extra information. Namely, Lisa Vernon-Sparks talks about how our sleep cycles aren t extremely different from each other s. She places a lot of emphasis upon this idea, highlighting this through comparisons between the sleep that an average athlete needs and the sleep a desk jockey needs, which is minimal.
Although this was published within a newspaper, the author still makes references to peer reviewed articles and authors that help build credibility. Austin Paragas University of Georgia. "Sleep Rocks!...get more of it!." University Health Center. University of Georgia, n.d. Web. 3 Mar I will use this source to mention advice that a professional source suggests we take to feel more rested and perform better in our daily lives involving academics or not. This article mostly explains the issues from inability to get adequate hours of sleep. It outlines possible consequences in academics, mood, and relationships that may be affected by shortage of sleep. This source also offers insight on to what may aid sleep with methods that do not include medication such as time management. "Sandvine: Netflix owns one-third of North American traffic at peak, has doubled its mobile share in 12 months." TNW Network All Stories RSS. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Mar I will use this source to use statistics that show the peak times that Americans use the internet when they could be being productive. Social media and streaming sites such as Facebook and Netflix are the key timewasters that I will focus on. This source contains statistical data that can be used in conjunction with knowledge learned from my own experience involving peak times for social media and types of streaming services. Kristina Slobodyan
Driscoll, Emily. Balancing Act: Tips for College Students to Best Manage their Time. Money 101. FOXBusiness. 28 Aug Web. 03 Mar I am planning to use this source as a form of advising students the importance of time management. This source mainly focuses on students who do not have much time on their hands due to them attempting to balance school, work, family/social obligations, and how they should evaluate their commitments in order to meet their goals with the time and support needed to maximize their success. It provides some statistical data on how many students who do not have much time on their hands and who also struggle with time management. Moreover, this source suggests the basic methods of time management that will help all students to be able to make enough time in their schedule and to meet their goals. Keeley, Meg. Managing Your Time and Study Environment. Bucks County Community College. The Basics of Effective Learning. 10 May Web. 03 Mar After analyzing the article I decided to use this source to provide more information in time management for college students. This source provides resources to students in order to resolve their time management issues. Furthermore, I believe that this source will greatly enhance my blog post for our website for this particular article provided more interesting methods of how college students may implement these changes to their routine in order to manage their time more wisely. Seeing as how I myself implemented some of these methods, which improved upon my own personal issues involving social media and my time management I believe that this source is not only informative, but also accurate. Rishi Dutt
Peri, Camille. "10 Surprising Effects of Lack of Sleep." WebMD. WebMD, 08 May Web. 04 Mar This article on WebMD talks about the effects of sleep deprivation, ranging from depression to more rapidly aging skin. Sleep Rocks!...get More of It!" University Health Center. University of Georgia, n.d. Web. 03 Mar University of Georgia s website brings to light many of the sleep deprivation-related issues many students might be having. It highlights the effects of long-term sleep deprivation on the body and the brain and some of the steps that can be taken to resolve those issues. Breus, Michael J., PhD. "Chronic Sleep Deprivation and Health Effects." WebMD. WebMD, n.d. Web. 03 Mar Michael J. Breus does a good job on explaining the many dangers of sleep deprivation when performing everyday tasks such as driving. Ben Grobeman Washington and Lee University. Study links heavy texting, sleep problems in college freshman. ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 26 September This article is based off of a study that was taken at Washington and Lee University based off students not sleeping enough because of their phones and texting. It ended up being based off of how many text messages a student sent every day and also received and then figured out which students got more sleep and which students got less sleep with the texting. To me this article is something that should not have to be even spoken about because with texting and
sleeping people should be able to have their own self-control to put a phone down and put it on silent to get the adequate amount of sleep that they need every night. Yahalom, Tali. "College Students' Performance Suffers from Lack of Sleep. Health & Behaivor. USA Today, n.d. Web. 08 Mar This article in USA Today speaks about how college are slowly realizing that students who are pulling all-nighters are projected to get a lower GPA then a student who is getting an adequate amount of sleep just about every night. Within the study at this school they also studied how athletes performed specifically basketball players while running on a sufficient amount of sleep and also how they performed poorly and the player s numbers dropped noticeably with less hours of sleep. Also a very standout and important part of the article to me is how they say that the lack of sleep will build up even if it is one hour less every night and end up making someone lack sleep and will be almost the equivalent of pulling an all-nighter eventually.
