2 Stroke Awareness Guide In the US, more than six million people have survived strokes. Stroke survivors have been aided by medical advancements and quick actions of those who know how to detect strokes and secure help. In efforts to raise awareness of the symptoms and importance of quick treatment, May has been designated National Stroke Awareness Month. On Friday April 7th and part of Saturday April 8th our campus experienced a power outage due to a local wind storm. The Portland Christian Center had already planned to have a recital elsewhere on Saturday. Unfortunately it had been cancelled. Luckily for us the fellowship heard of our need and had their recital here! Not only did children come to sing for our residents, but there was a piano performance by candle light & the they came with blankets prepared to wrap our wonderful seniors in love & warmth! Here are some important things to know about strokes and how to help if someone may be having one: What is a stroke? A stroke occurs when an artery that carries nutrients and oxygen to the brain becomes blocked, bursts, or ruptures, the brain stops receiving blood it needs, and brain cells begin to die, according to the ASA. For those who are interested there is a small piece on KGW news about the of these symptoms - even if the symptoms go away - call 911 and say I think this is a stroke, to help the person get the immediate medical attention they need. Time is very important with strokes, so note when symptoms have occurred and let emergency responders know. If a stroke is suspected, fast action is recommended, which is why FAST is the acronym for stroke detection and seeking help. F: Face drooping. Does one side of the person s face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile and note if their smile is uneven or lopsided. A: Arm Weakness. Is one of their arms weak or experiencing numbness? As the person to lift one arm and note if it drifts downward. S: Speech Difficulty. Is the person s speech slurred or difficult to understand? Are they unable to speak? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence like, The grass is green. Can the person do this? T: Time to call 911. If a person shows any 2 Community Support: Mini-strokes can also occur, in which the brain s blood supply is blocked for a short period and the brain temporarily malfunctions, according to the NSA. Symptoms are sudden and include numbness, weakness or vision loss, difficulty speaking, confusion, severe headache with no known cause, and/or loss of balance or coordination. The symptoms last for a short period and then disappear. If a mini-stroke is suspected, a doctor should be seen immediately. story of our power outage. Article Stroke Title Risks Goes Factors: Here A few of the major factors leading to strokes are: Blood Pressure Being Over Weight Alcohol Consumption & Smoking. Blood Pressure- We should not wait until the doctor visit when we are told I m am sorry, but you have high blood pressure- you will need to change your lifestyle or be at risk of having a stroke or heart attack. But, the truth is that most people do not even think of the consequence of their lifestyles until it comes down to having someone in authority point it out. So please, take a moment to look at your life style habits now and evaluate whether you may need to lower your blood pressure. Do you exercise on a regular basis? Are you eating regular balanced meals? Are you able to control your stress level? All of these are essential ways to keep your blood pressure in check and avoid that dreaded conversation with the doctor in charge. Being Over Weight- Check with your physician. If you are 5-10 pounds over-weight then it may not be a serious concern. But, your physician may want to talk to you about ways to lose some of those unwanted pounds. Before going on an extensive exercise routine you may be recommended to try portion control & hydration. Many of us are stress eaters and use food as a form of comfort and not just for fueling our bodies.another essential fuel for life is water. Too many individuals over look staying hydrated. Find us on Facebook! Staying hydrated aids in weight loss & mood. But, did you know? When the body is dehydrated blood clots can form. The thicker the blood in the body is, the more at risk for stroke one may be. Alcohol Consumption- Excessive alcohol consumption can cause Atrial fibrillation which is an irregular heart beat that causes stroke. The key to alcohol consumption for health and safety is drink in moderation. Smoking- Most of us already know the risks of smoking and how it can affect our bodies in ways like: damaging the lungs, overall aesthetics and even cancer. But smoking also plays a role in stroke. Like being dehydrated, smoking also causes blood clots to form & increases the amount of plaque build-up in the arteries. Jacob M. leading group exercise during the power outage We ve been sharing more and more on our Facebook page recently and would love to have you join the conversation!
