Many people agree that e-cigs are a safer and healthier alternative to regular cigarettes, but how do they work? How E-Cigs Work E-cigs are made up of 3 main parts: the battery, the atomizer or cartomizer, and the refillable nicotine cartridge. They serve the same function, supplying the user with a controlled amount of nicotine minus the harmful chemicals of tobacco, but some may have different special features than others. E-cigs work similarly to that of a regular cigarette minus the harmful chemicals. You drag on the cartridge at the end of the e-cigarette which supplies you with the nicotine through a mist or water vapor, which resembles smoke when exhaled. The opposite side of the mouthpiece on most electronic cigarettes has a light which lights up in varying colors, simulating the flame of a real cigarette and also indicating that the unit is in use. E-cigs are usually a cigarette shaped tube consisting of the battery which powers the device, the atomizer which is basically a heating 3
element, and the cartridge that holds the nicotine liquid and/or flavoring. When the device is turned on (typically by a pressure sensitive switch) it will activate the atomizer. The atomizer has a heating coil which is powered by the rechargeable battery. It heats up the liquid inside of the refillable cartridge and produces a mist or vapor of nicotine which is then inhaled. The vapor looks the same as real smoke and gives the same feeling as smoking real cigarettes, but is more like the smoke from fog machines and dissipates quickly. From there, smoking an e-cigarette is the same as smoking a regular cigarette, minus the health hazards. You do not have to include nicotine in e-cigs as cartridges are available in high, medium, low, and no nicotine levels. This is an important factor of e-cigarettes as users can cut down their nicotine use slowly with the range of nicotine concentrations and flavors available in order to completely quit smoking, or at least quit tobacco cigarettes at the very least. Water vapor is great for preventing odor and stains indoors, when compared to regular cigarette smoke. This makes it possible to smoke e-cigs in places where smoking would otherwise be prohibited since there is no real smoke, and it doesn t cause any second hand effects to those nearby. So if it s not Smoke, What is it? When you use an electronic cigarette you are inhaling the vapor of liquid nicotine. The nicotine is heated via the battery operated electrode mentioned earlier and then turned into a vapor. The FDA says that there is no way of telling yet what the health implications are for this vapor, but the fact is we KNOW what the health implications are for tobacco smoke. The big question in the electronic cigarette industry still remains, are they a healthier alternative? If you look at the ingredients of e- cigs compared to cigarettes it only makes sense that they could be safer for your health. You should use your best judgment in deciding what you put into your body. 4 5
The History of E-Cigs They were first created to be a safer alternative to cigarettes. The advantage to e-cigs as compared to other tobacco replacement therapy like nicotine gum or nicotine patches is that e-cigarettes solve the other half of the problem, which is the physical habit of smoking. A smoker can use an e-cig in the same way they smoked a traditional cigarette and actual will be able to vaporize in more places without offending people. In 1963 there was a primitive design for an e- cigarette that used steam to deliver a nicotine solution. Some companies showed interest in producing the product but all public records of it mysteriously disappear after In 2000 Hon Lik who is a Chinese pharmacist came up with the idea for the modern e-cigarette and is credited with its invention. It did not hit the market until 2004 and then was only marketed to China as a smoking cessation product. In 2006 it started to be exported and in 2007 it received a full patent. In America you could say electronic cigarettes have had a rough go. The FDA studied them in 2009 and reported that they contained chemicals that were carcinogens and could be detrimental to health. Even though some of those ingredients were FDA approved and can be found in products like asthma inhalers. Many medical journals have reported that the FDA findings were very skewed and many of the chemicals the FDA cited to be dangerous were only found in amounts about one million times less then would be considered detrimental to health. On the other hand the American Association of Public Health Physicians have supported the sale of e-cigarettes stating that they feel millions of lives could be saved over the next twenty years. This was considered by looking at the number of deaths projected to occur due to tobacco smoking alone. In 2010 the Boston University of School of Public Health Study found that e-cigarettes were better for your health than regular cigarettes. 6 7
They also said further tests were needed but the health concerns of e-cigs resembled that of other nicotine replacements like gum. The study also showed that e-cigarettes contained carcinogens 1000 times lower than tobacco cigarettes. In 2009 and 2010 the FDA fought to place severe restrictions on electronic cigarettes which would not allow importation from China. This was fought in court and overruled, allowing e- cigarettes to be imported and regulated as tobacco products. Electronic cigarettes have had a tough go so far to reach the market in the United States. One can only speculate as to why that might be but the imagination does not need to be too expansive to figure out the economic repercussions that may be holding it back. I find it astounding the FDA fights against such a product while cigarettes continue to be the leading cause of COPD which costs the citizens of the US 43 billion dollars a year. being harmful, the research is proving otherwise. Many doctors and healthcare professionals agree that electronic cigarettes are a much healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes; both for those looking for a alternative, and those looking to quit completely. If there is no harmful second hand smoke and it s assisting people in quitting smoking and getting healthy, then what s the issue? The FDA and other research groups are still funding research on the full effects and benefits of electronic cigarettes, and so far the results look positive. Although there are many anti-smoking groups trying to target electronic cigarettes for 8 9
E-Cigs vs. Cigarettes Quitting smoking can be extremely difficult, even with the help of products like nicotine patches and even harder going cold turkey. E-cigs provide a practical yet much healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes, but without any of the harmful chemicals and carcinogens. They work on the basis of cutting out the thousands of chemicals known to cause cancer and other diseases, and providing the user with a controlled amount of nicotine. Although other quit smoking alternatives do provide the user with a controlled amount of nicotine, they do not make up for the actual feeling and motion of smoking a cigarette. Not to mention that they are usually very expensive. Sometimes it s harder to quit smoking because of the actual habit of smoking a cigarette. E-cigs give the user the familiar act and feel of smoking a regular cigarette but without the many health drawbacks. As e-cigs do not contain any of the thousands of chemicals directly linked to cancer which are found in traditional cigarettes, they are a much healthier alternative. Even the smoke in e-cigs is not real 10 11
smoke, which is a definite plus as there is no second hand smoke or nasty odour that clings to clothes. This also means that e-cigs are safe to use indoors, which can be very beneficial at times (like the winter). Nicotine concentrations vary in none, low, medium, high levels of nicotine so the user can monitor their intake. It works on the same principle as with other nicotine control products such as patches or gum, but e-cigs are preferred because they tend to be more cost effective and people still enjoy the act of smoking. Many e-cig models also provide the added option of a notification which lets the user know how many puffs they have taken per use, which can be used as a good indication of how much nicotine you are using (which we will be talking more about later in this ebook). E-cigs are a practical, healthier, and more economical way to successfully quit smoking compared to most other alternatives. Other Alternatives to Cigarettes Even though e-cigs tend to be more enjoyed than other products with nicotine in them you do have several options when it comes to tobacco alternatives and here we are going to talk about some of them. Situations that you may find yourself in where you may need to have an alternative to cigarettes could be going out to eat, attending an event inside a public place, being at work, visiting someone in the hospital, shopping in a mall or visiting a nonsmoking home. Nicotine Patches A nicotine patch is a transdermal method of delivering nicotine to the user without ingesting tobacco smoke. Nicotine patches come in different strengths which deliver different doses of nicotine to the user. In smoking cessation this is useful because it allows the person to step down nicotine doses, essentially weaning off nicotine all together. Nicotine patches can be expensive and are best used to try and wean off nicotine and eventually quit cigarettes
Nicotine Gum Nicotine gum is another product designed for smoking cessation. Nicotine gum is reported to be a better method of getting nicotine compared to nicotine patches. The gum works by chewing it in order to remove the outside shell which allows the nicotine to get to the users mouth. Once this occurs the gum is then placed in the cheeks of the user until the craving is gone. The user can continue chewing the piece in order to get more nicotine out of it. Nicotine gum can also be expensive and it is not recommended to be used for more than 12 weeks. for a smoker to get the nicotine they crave without needing to escape somewhere to smoke. Also by using cigarette alternatives you will not have the smell or breath that goes along with smoking cigarettes. E-Cigs can be More Affordable Nicotine Lozenges Nicotine lozenges are another form of smoking cessation. They deliver nicotine to the user through the lining of the mouth. Lozenges are normally flavored and dissolve just like a cough drop. Drinking anything 15 minutes before using a lozenge will diminish the absorption rate and therefore limit the effects of the lozenge. As we mentioned before if you are a heavy smoker, switching to e-cigarettes will actually save you a lot more money! Most electronic cigarettes come with refillable e-juice cartridges, allowing you to purchase cheaper refills and experiment with different flavors and nicotine concentrations until you find the one that suits you. You will literally save These alternative methods can make it easier 14 15
hundreds of dollars a year compared to what the cost of regular cigarettes is today. Other nicotine products on the market such as nicotine patches or nicotine nasal spray may serve the same purpose, they are very expensive. Electronic cigarettes give users a familiar experience of smoking but without the thousands of harmful chemicals. From there, users can slowly monitor and decrease the nicotine concentrations at a level their comfortable at
As you may know, traditional cigarettes contain over 4,000 harmful chemicals, carcinogens and toxins which are known to cause serious health implications such as cancer. E-cigs on the other hand do not contain any of these harmful chemicals. In fact, the primary ingredient found in electronic cigarettes is nicotine so you will get a much more pure smoking experience. Your Health Electronic cigarettes have become a major topic of discussion since they were introduced to the United States in They have become the go-to choice as an alternative to traditional tobacco cigarettes which contain thousands of harmful chemicals directly linked to cancer and other diseases. They have been featured on almost every major television news network, as well as many publications. Many doctors and other health professionals have recognized the benefits of switching to electronic cigarettes, as well as recommending them to people looking for a practical way to quit. So you might be asking now: what about the health effects of electronic cigarettes? 18 19
The Chief of Staff at UCLA Santa Monica explains that nicotine absolutely does not cause cancer. What causes cancer is the tar and carcinogens left behind from cigarette smoke which are inhaled and left behind in the respiratory tract. There have been no studies linking the use of electronic cigarettes to cancer or other diseases. Instead, the usage of electronic cigarettes as an alternative to regular cigarettes has risen to hundreds of thousands of users. Not only that, but many health care practitioners are actually recommending the use of electronic cigarettes as a method to help people quit, like nicotine patches or nicotine gym. The nicotine dosages in electronic cigarettes can also be controlled and monitored by the user, unlike traditional cigarettes. Many units like the The Devine Smoke s KGO-T model have additional features that give the user a reading of how many puffs they have taken, which gives the user an indication of how much nicotine they are consuming. Not only does this give you an easier way to track you progress towards quitting or for personal knowledge, it also lets you know if you should progress towards lower concentrations of e-juice liquid. E-juice liquid also comes in zero nicotine concentrations, for those who have a harder time trying to kick the actual habit of smoking than the nicotine. E-Cigarettes to Quit Smoking Quitting smoking is a hard enough battle as it is, even with the help of methods which help control cravings. As mentioned in the 20 21
22 previous chapter nicotine gum and patches have been reported to be not as effective as they were thought to be. Electronic cigarettes have been a relatively new addition to the market as a safer alternative to smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes. They have gained mass popularity in a short amount of time, at an estimated 700,000 people using electronic cigarettes to quit smoking. As we mentioned before since the concentration of nicotine comes in high, medium, low, and none we can now monitor your nicotine intake and control cravings in order to quit smoking all together with the help of electronic cigarettes (if you wanted to stop). Electronic cigarettes still provide the user with the typical experience of smoking, which is a big difference in using a patch or nicotine gum. Those who are used to smoking regular cigarettes have a harder time kicking the habit of physically smoking a cigarette, which nicotine patches or gum can t replicate. Electronic cigarettes on the other hand provide a similar experience in both the action of smoking, and the smoke as well. The smoke is actually just harmless water vapor from the e-juice which is heated up inside the battery powered electronic cigarette unit. Many health care professionals have recommended electronic cigarettes for those looking to quit smoking gradually, or just as a healthier alternative. Many illnesses and cancers associated with Compared to traditional tobacco cigarettes, the user is not exposing themselves and those around them to toxic smoke full of cancer causing carcinogens, tar, and many other chemicals. Dr. Lessnau, a critical care specialist and Lenox Hill Hospital explains further, regular tobacco products produce more than 1,000 toxic substances, many of them tar related whereas, electronic cigarettes do not. Electronic cigarettes are a great way to quit smoking in a realistic way. They can be used indoors as well since the water vapor disperses quickly, leaving no smell, not setting of fire alarms, or causing an annoyance to those around. The user is able to control the amount 23
of nicotine they consume per use, and also do not have to be forced to smoke a whole cigarette when they do use it. Just the sheer amount of harmful chemicals being avoided from traditional cigarettes is a good enough reason to switch. The Effects of E-Cigs There has been an up stir about potential side effects of electronic cigarettes, but nothing conclusive has come from them. The only thing electronic cigarettes provide the user is a controlled amount of nicotine, the physical experience of smoking a cigarette without the harmful additives, and a way to efficiently stray from smoking for good. The only minor issue about nicotine is that it has been shown to constrict your blood vessels. Long term use of nicotine leading to constricted blood vessels can sometimes (or rarely) lead to some heart issues and cardiovascular diseases; a very miniscule risk since there hasn t been enough research to document heart disease or cardiovascular disease from e-cigarettes. Especially when compared to the side effects of tobacco and real cigarettes, it should be no question as to switching to e-cigarettes. Nicotine patches and gum have been widely available and recommended from doctors for many years as a way to help patients quit smoking, and e-cigarettes serve the same purpose; supplying nicotine without the many side effects of other tobacco related products. It is no wonder why the majority of doctors recommend patients to try electronic cigarettes as a means to quit smoking or switch to something healthier. There are virtually no side effects from e- cigarettes, or extremely limited to say the least. Electronic cigarettes release harmless water vapor which looks like smoke to give the realistic feeling of smoking, compared to real smoke which is filled with carcinogenic chemicals, tar, and many other things directly linked to many diseases and cancer. The only real effects of electronic cigarettes are the documented cases of people quitting smoking and feeling healthier from using them
So, are E-Cigs Better for You? According to experts like Joel Nitzkin, who is the head of the Tobacco Control Task Force for the American Association of Public Health Physicians, if people switched from traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes the overall death toll from smoking could decrease dramatically. Although the electronic cigarette is still young there is plenty of evidence to suggest that they may be better for your health than traditional tobacco cigarettes. The fact is that electronic cigarettes do not deliver the tar and harmful chemicals that tobacco cigarettes give you. Even the show The Doctors has featured electronic cigarettes as a health trend. On the show they say that there is finally hope for people addicted to smoking, the electronic cigarette. It is exciting for health professionals to finally have an alternative to share with people who are addicted to smoking. For years they have watched as patients struggle to quit smoking even when symptoms from COPD and Emphysema creep into their lives. Electronic cigarettes do offer smokers an alternative way to get nicotine without any tar or other of the harmful carcinogens found in tobacco smoke. Do E-Cigs Give 2nd Hand Smoke? Inhaling second hand smoke from a regular cigarette is actually more harmful to a bystander compared to actually smoking the cigarette itself. As there is no real smoke from the use of electronic cigarettes, there s no second hand smoke left behind. The visible smoke that comes from electronic cigarettes in fact is just harmless water vapor which quickly disperses after it s exhaled by the user. This also makes electronic cigarettes safe enough to use indoors. On top of that, there is no awful smell or lingering odor unlike regular cigarettes. Since electronic cigarettes are still a relatively new solution and alternative to traditional tobacco cigarettes, there s still much research to be done on the subject. So far though, the results 26 27
seems promising. Recent studies have shown that the vapor exhaled by users of electronic cigarettes doesn t contain any nicotine or harmful second hand chemicals in it. Basically, even if the water vapor is inhaled by a third party, they will not be exposed to any nicotine or other harmful chemicals, even indoors. Any other additives found in the vapor have also been shown to be well below the FDA limits. Traditional cigarettes have over times the harmful chemicals and toxins, where electronic cigarettes only have very limited trace amounts as reported by a study done by the FDA. electronic cigarettes is healthy for you, but it is a much better alternative to traditional cigarettes which not only harm you but those around you with second hand smoke along with many other benefits. The water vapor from electronic cigarettes disperses very quickly, and does not linger around like smoke from tobacco. You might have heard or noticed too that tobacco smoke tends to cling to clothes or even worse, you! In most cases even if you vape indoors or even next to a person, it will not cause any irritation or noticeable smell for them. We are not saying consistently smoking from 28 29
