2 Mississippi Population: 2,967,297 (US Census, 2010) African American Population Rate: 37% (US Census, 2010) National Ranks: #1 Highest Rate in Poverty 28% (UI & KC, 2011) #1 Highest Rate in Obesity/Overweight 68% (CDC/BRFSS, 2010) #50 th Health Care System Performance (CF, 2011) MS was the 1 st State that challenged tobacco companies and sued them for the health care costs associated with smoking tobacco (1994). 2

6 Purpose of the Study To explore tobacco use status among people with disabilities in MS. To define the barriers that limit the ability in receiving/accessing smoking cessation information and resources. To initiate tobacco cessation and control strategies for people with disabilities. 6
7 Research Questions Why do people with disabilities in MS smoke? Have they tried to access available cessation programs? What barriers prevented individuals with disabilities from participating in tobacco cessation programs? Are people with disabilities who smoke physically active? Would physical activity assist people with disabilities in their efforts to stop using tobacco? 7

19 Finding Focus Groups Q: Why do they smoke? A: Reduce stress, Addiction/Habit, Drinking alcohol/social gathering, Eating, Boredom. Q: Have they tried to access available cessation programs? A: No. Q: What barriers prevent them from participating in cessation programs? A: Cost of the programs, No desire to quit, Time conflict, Being around others who smoke, Transportation/Parking. Q: Are they physically active (regular exercise)? A: No. Q: Would physical activity assist them in their efforts to stop tobacco use? A: Majority believes so because of stress reduction and keeping minds and hands busy from using tobacco. 19
20 Finding Interviews Q: Why do they smoke? A: Reduce stress, Addiction/Habit, Family & friends smoke, No desire to quit. Q: Have they tried to access available cessation programs? A: No data assessed for this population. Q: What barriers prevent them from participating in cessation programs? A: Transportation, No desire to quit, Lack of culturally appropriate programs, Cost of products, Challenges of disability conditions, Lack of awareness of existing programs, Program delivery methods. 20
21 Next Phase Use the data collected from the study to create accessible and practical tobacco cessation programs strategically and specifically targeting Mississippians with disabilities. 21
