The Northwell Health Medical Marvels Competition is one way we re inspiring and empowering the next generation of healthcare visionaries. Established in 2013 by the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and the Center for Workforce Readiness, Medical Marvels exposes 9th and 10th grade high school students to an incredible world of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. As we raise these students awareness of the multidisciplinary impact of STEM careers, we encourage their creativity while helping school districts and industry leaders develop assets and improve the economic future of students. A look back In 2018, more than 100 students across 23 school districts participated in the sixth annual Medical Marvels Competition focused on prescription painkillers. Winners include: First place, Jericho High School; second place, Elwood John Glenn High School; third place, North Shore High Schooll. In addition, Ward Melville Senior High School, Commack High School, and Plainview Old Bethpage JFK High School won presentation awards.

3 Northwell Health is pleased to announce the 2019 Medical Marvels challenge focus: Vaping Background We ve all seen people inhaling from something that looks like a pen or a small box with a tube and exhaling a large billowy white cloud. That s vaping and it s becoming increasingly popular especially among youth. Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling an aerosol, often referred to as vapor, which is produced by an e-cigarette or similar device. It s called vaping because e-cigarettes do not produce tobacco smoke, but rather an aerosol, often mistaken for water vapor. This aerosol actually consists of fine particles and contrary to popular opinion, is not harmless. It can contain potentially harmful constituents including nicotine. Nicotine exposure during adolescence can cause addiction and harm brain development. According to a 2016 report released by the US Surgeon General, e-cigarette use has increased an astounding 900 percent among high school students between 2011 and Vaping has grown in popularity with this rise of e-cigarettes. Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), vaping is now the most common method of consuming nicotine among high school and middle school students. Approximately 12 percent of high school students used e-cigarettes in 2017, compared to only about 3 percent of US adults. Although e-cigarettes are touted as products to help adults quit cigarettes, health experts are hesitant to promote e-cigarettes as healthier alternatives to traditional cigarettes. Some evidence has shown that e-cigarette use can lead to other forms of tobacco use among youth, and researchers are still trying to gain a clear understanding of the health effects of vaping. Many fear that today s youth who are using e-cigarettes could become tomorrow s cigarette smokers. We invite students in grades 9 and 10 to participate in the 2019 Medical Marvels Competition, which consists of the following components: Hypothetical challenge You are the principal of a high school in New York State. Over the last year, more and more of your students are vaping both on school grounds and during class. Despite standard disciplinary action, the problem persists and is becoming even more concerning. You have also heard rumors that students are using the vaping device to vaporize other chemicals, in addition to nicotine. Having read articles and heard news stories about the epidemic of teen vaping and the damaging health risks associated with it, your school district s superintendent is extremely worried. She comes to your office and tasks you with developing and implementing a solution to end this crisis. Your solution will involve answering these questions: 1. What are the risks of vaping at your school? Examine the concerns of exposure to nicotine and toxic substances, dependence and abuse, and secondhand exposure associated with e-cigarettes and vaping among youth and young adults. 2. What research can be conducted to understand the cause and scope of the problem at your school in order to develop an appropriate solution? 3. How will you and your team come up with an innovative solution to solve this epidemic at your school? 4. What tools can you use to bring awareness to your peers and community on the dangers of vaping? 5. How will you and your team relay a message to those affected by this epidemic? 6. How will you and your team measure the effectiveness of your solution?

4 Eligibility and requirements To ensure participants receive consideration in the competition, please review the following eligibility and participation requirements: Evaluation and awards eligibility School eligibility - Any New York State accredited educational institution located in Nassau, Suffolk, Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island or Westchester is eligible to participate. Due to the expansion of the program, there will be a limited number of teams allowed to participate. The teams will be selected based on a first come first serve basis. A maximum of one team per institution will be accepted for awards and judging. Student eligibility - Each team must have a minimum of three and maximum of six students. All student team members must be in 9th or 10th grade and actively enrolled in the educational institution designated on the submission. Number of teams - only one team per school can submit a proposal for judging, awards, and attendance at the Medical Marvels Competition in March If you have multiple teams wishing to participate, we encourage schools to host an internal competition in order to select one team to represent the school. The representing team does not need to be chosen until the final proposal is submitted on February 8, Evaluation and awards Evaluation process The team representing your school is required to submit the completed proposal to medicalmarvels@ northwell.edu by 4:00pm February 8, All proposals will undergo an evaluation and judging process, which will be conducted by a panel of scientists, clinicians and healthcare administrators using the National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant scoring criteria. Your school's team will additionally have the opportunity to present their completed proposal at the Medical Marvels Competition on March 8, Presentations and workshops will be held from 8am to 1pm. First, second, third, and presentation winners will be announced at the conclusion of the event. Student teams will bring their display boards and present to judges, researchers, and their fellow peers during the poster presentation. Awards The winning team will receive an award in the amount of $1,800. The second place team will receive an award in the amount of $1,000. The third place team will receive an award in the amount of $500. Presentation winners will receive an award in the amount of $300. Key dates November 8, 2018: Intent to participate due November 12, 2018: Detailed guidelines sent to schools November 14, 2018 at 4pm: Webinar for mentors/advisors December 13, 2018: Submission of student teams and contact information February 8, 2019 at 4pm: Written proposals due to medicalmarvels@northwell.edu.
