2 EPS a definition The Electronic Prescription Service will enable electronic prescriptions to be generated, transmitted, received and, once dispensed, sent to the reimbursement agency for payment.

3 Why are we doing this? UK Government initiatives NHS Plan 2000 Pharmacy in the future 2000 Delivering 21 st Century IT to support the NHS (2002) Pilots in 2002/03 confirmed EPS was technically viable and would provide benefits

4 Expected Benefits EPS will enable the efficient, convenient and accurate dispensing of medication to patients Patient convenience will be improved with the introduction of nomination and electronic repeat dispensing Deliver process efficiencies (>1.5 million paper prescriptions per day growing at 5% p.a) Patient Safety - Support medication management - Repeat Dispensing - Cancellation
