16 After suffering with moderate diagnoses of both, I have had the feeling that I would rather have cancer than depression. After thinking about it, I realized why: When you have cancer, you are surrounded by a support system. There's people who care about you and want you to get better everywhere you look. When you're depressed, you may not have this support and you will probably feel incredibly lonely. People who have cancer are generally viewed as fighters and survivors while people with depression are typically viewed as weak and pathetic. While depressed, you will have a difficult time finding the strength and the hope to heal. All you can see is an endless dark tunnel. With cancer, there is often hope, even if it's small, that you will get through what's happening.
