According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 1,825 students between 18 and 24 die each year from alcohol related incidents Almost 600,000 students are injured while drunk.

Component One

The best way to avoid all the unwanted effects is to not drink at all If you are under 21, it is illegal to drink If, however, you do make the choice to drink, we can talk about ways to do so in a less dangerous and less risky way Any steps toward reduced risk are steps in the right direction

Component Two

What are ways alcohol affects you positively in a social situation? What are ways alcohol affects you in not-so-good ways in social situations? Have you ever had alcohol do different things for you at different times?

The effects of substances are due to the drug itself, the setting a person is in, and his/her mindset. The expectancy effect is more powerful than the chemical or physiological effects of alcohol. The social and interpersonal things that happen with alcohol are a result of expectancies.

Component Three

A standard drink is any beverage that contains ½ oz of ethyl alcohol 12 oz beer 10 oz microbrew 8 oz ice beer or malt liquor 4 oz wine 2.5 oz fortified wine 1.25 oz 80-proof alcohol 1 oz 100-proof alcohol

Beer Malt Liquor Wine Liquor

What do you usually drink? Think of an occasion when you drank the most. Your average number of drinks per week? How much does the average college student drink per week?

90% of college students drink and on average, they consume 10 drinks per week

Component Six

When people start to lose their buzz, what do they do? Do they ever get their buzz back? For people with tolerance, is the buzz you get now as good as the buzz you used to get How much does the average college student drink per week?

Alcohol s Biphasic Effect Stimulant or buzz feeling Point of diminishing returns Baseline (normal activity) Depressant effects Elapsed Time BAC = 0.06%

What does that mean for college students? Most important, every person has to find his/her own limit based on what she wants to get out of drinking.

Potentation Examples: Alcohol + Marijuana Alcohol + Vicodin Alcohol + Valium

Antagonistic Interaction Examples: Alcohol + Cocaine Alcohol + Speed Alcohol + Ecstasy Alcohol + Energy Drink

When do people drink beyond the point of diminishing return? What are your experiences? What do buzz and drunk mean to you? How does the point of being buzzed or drunk relate to the 0.05%-0.06% recommendation maximum limit? Why could there be value in reducing tolerance?

Component Seven

For those who currently abstain, stick with that! For those who typically drink below.05%-.06%, stick with that! You re less impaired at 0.02% than you would be at.05% For those who typically drink above.06%, consider setting a limit between.05%-.06% in order to maximize the positive effects and minimize the negative effects.

Set your drinking limit before a social drinking occasion. Keep track of how much you drink. Space your drinks. Alternate alcoholic drinks with nonalcoholic beverages. Drink for quality, not quantity. Avoid drinking games. Learn drink refusal skills. Find other things to do. Don t accept a drink if you don t know what s in it.

75% of Acquaintance rapes involve alcohol On initial dates and larger parties, be selective about when and how much you drink is important Remember, alcohol doesn t improve sexual performance Watch out for friends. A friend who has been drinking may have impaired judgment and may need your help to avoid making poor decisions about sex.

Arrange all transportation needs well in advance of a party or drinking occasion Select a reliable designated driver who agrees to stay sober throughout the party. Leave your car keys at home or in the possession of the designated driver. Bring enough money for a cab.
