2 National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) q Funded states have developed tools, guidance, and communication documents for EMS that address or include disability Ohio: training video for EMS workers with focus on service animals tu.be Illinois: disseminates a flipchart from the University of New Mexico to emergency responders North Dakota: developed a video for emergency planners to emphasize awareness of Universal Design

3 National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) q Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (DHDSP) Funds 9 states (CA, GA, MA, MI, MN, NY, OH, WA, WI) through the Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Program EMS activities are a core component of the stroke system of care States use NEMSIS data for EMS quality improvement and linking care from the pre-hospital setting to in-hospital patient records Assessing the utility of the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES) data for public access defibrillation policy analysis Member of FICEMS Technical Workgroup on Data Standards and Exchange and FICEMS Evidence-based Practice and Quality Committee

4 National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) q Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention (DUIP) 11 states (KY, ME, MA, NH, NM, OH, OK, PA, RI, WI, WV) will supply information on suspected drug overdoses, opioid-related overdoses, and/or heroin overdoses by state and county on a quarterly basis starting 4/15/2017 for a 3-year project period States will be developing state-based case definitions that leverage the unique strengths of their data Additional information:

5 NCIPC activities (cont d-1) q From an epidemiology investigation in MA: Found large increases in multiple naloxone dosages among community naloxone programs in areas heavily affected by fentanyl Saw some instances in which naloxone administered in the community was insufficient to save the person s life. Report coming soon q Partner on a systematic review project about EMS use and naloxone Project led by AHRQ with DOT/NHTSA, SAMHSA, and NIH

6 NCIPC activities (cont d-2) q Providing scientific support to the Greenville Medical Center with the Stop the Bleed campaign q Joint collaboration with CDC, FDA, and NHTSA found: More naloxone is needed, per patient, over time, to reverse a drug overdose case Multiple administrations are more common where there are more fentanyl overdoses Article currently under review with a journal q Collaborating with the University of California, Davis to examine if EMS providers can determine if a patient with a traumatic brain injury is taking anticoagulants. Publication is pending

8 NIOSH activities (cont d-1) Served on the Emergency Preparedness and Response Subcommittee of OSHA s National Advisory Committee on Safety and Health (NACOSH) Manage/facilitate the NORA Public Safety Sector and Council q Briefed the full membership of NAEMSP during their annual meeting in January 2017 q Partnered with DHS, National Institute of Standards and Technology, and ambulance manufacturers to develop specific crash safety test methods q Participate on 3 ambulance construction specifications or standards

9 NIOSH activities (cont d-2) q Studying the efficacy of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) systems for ambulance disinfection during pandemics Manuscript is under development Manuscript discussing the development of easy-to-use colorimetric UVGI dose indicators for ambulance crews is also in development q Completed a 640-person anthropometry study of the EMS worker population Data can be used to improve workspace design and PPE fit Data now available for public use at: 0/default.html?s_cid=3ni7d2_JG

10 NIOSH activities (cont d-3) q Collaborating with NHTSA to develop products from a telephone interview study conducted to describe nonfatal injuries and illnesses to EMS workers Published in Prehospital Emergency Care in January 2017 ( ) q Developing an on-line violence prevention course specific to EMS (target completion in FY2018) q Completing manuscript describing workers compensation claims among private industry EMS employers in Ohio to understand the causes of injury and develop prevention strategies
