1 April 2017 Patients and Practice: Healthier Together Tel: Janet Street Thurso KW14 7AR Wartime food shopping There were no supermarkets you went to different shops for different items. For fruit and vegetables, you went to the greengrocer, for meat, to the butcher, for fish to the fishmonger, for bread and cakes, to the baker, for jam, tea, biscuits and cheese you went to the grocer. In most shops, the shopkeeper or shop assistants served customers from behind a counter. Many shops were small family businesses. Facts on Food & Eating habits during World War II Rationing Food rationing began in This meant each person could buy only a fixed amount of certain foods each week. Much of Britain's food came from other countries in ships. Enemy submarines sank so many ships that there was a shortage of some foods. Rationing made sure everyone got a fair share. You had to hand over coupons from your ration book, as well as money, when you went shopping. When you had used up your ration of one food (say, cheese or meat), you could not buy any more that week. Vegetarians could swap meat coupons for other foods. What could people buy? People had to register with local shops to use their ration books. Often long queues formed as soon as people heard that shops had more supplies. The first foods rationed were bacon, sugar, tea, butter and meat. Lots more foods were rationed later, including sweets! One egg a week was the ration in There were no bananas, so younger children did not see their first banana until the war ended. What foods would we have missed? Frozen pizza, chicken nuggets, burgers and chips perhaps. Remember, there were no home freezers! Potatoes were not rationed, so you could make your own chips - if you could find some oil or fat to cook them in. In summer, people were asked to eat more salads, to save cooking fuel. With eggs rationed, people tried dried egg powder. One packet was equal to 12 fresh eggs. Dried egg made good scrambled eggs, but it was bad luck if you only liked eggs fried or boiled. Unfamiliar foods appeared too, such as Spam (tinned meat) from America, and snoek, a fish from South Africa. Grow your own food Many people grew vegetables at home or on allotments. Children helped 'Dig for Victory' by digging, planting and weeding. Some children worked on farms picking potatoes and fruit. Some families kept chickens, ducks and rabbits (to eat). People started 'Pig Clubs', collecting food leftovers in pig bins to feed the pigs. There were plenty of potatoes and carrots, and lots of suggestions for new ways to cook them! 'Potato Pete' and 'Doctor Carrot' advertised these foods, to encourage people to eat more of them.

2 Newsletter April 2017 Page 2 Facts on Food & Eating habits today We have come a long way from the days of rationing during World War II. We enjoy more variety of food and treats, we eat out and snack more than ever before but to what effects is this having on our health? Scotland 2015, 65% of adults aged 16 and over were overweight, including 29% who were obese. There has been an increase in the proportion who are overweight or obese among both sexes (aged 16-64) since 1995, from 52% to 62%. Most of this increase was seen between 1995 and 2008, with figures remaining broadly stable since then. When poor eating habits spiral out of control, it could cause serious health problems down the road. Healthy eating habits affect both mental and physical wellness. Healthy eating starts with learning new ways to eat, such as adding more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and cutting back on foods that have a lot of fat, salt, and sugar. A change to healthier eating also includes learning about balance, variety, and moderation. How does poor nutrition affect us? being overweight or obese - tooth decay - high blood pressure - high cholesterol - heart disease and stroke - type-2 diabetes osteoporosis - some cancers. If we just dropped two chocolate biscuits and a can of sugary fizzy juice one day each week over a year, we cut out 16,000 calories from our diet! Food labels contain so much information, it s often difficult to know what you should be looking for and what it all means. But if you want to improve your diet and make healthy choices, it's important to get into the habit of checking the label. Unhealthy snacks and treats like chocolate, cakes, biscuits and sugary drinks can be hard to resist and many of us know we treat ourselves and our kids too often. But if we carry on 2 in 5 of the Scottish population will be obese by 2030 that s just 14 years away. We don t have to accept this future. There are many things we can do. So why not start by dropping just one a day and taking it from there. Or go one step further to join us in #treatfreetuesdays for one snack free day a week. Over 41,200 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year in the UK. More than nine out of ten new cases (94%) are diagnosed in people over the age of 50, and nearly six out of ten cases (59%) are diagnosed in people aged 70 or over. But bowel cancer can affect any age. More than 2,500 new cases are diagnosed each year in people under the age of in 14 men (7%) and 1 in 19 women (5%) will be diagnosed with bowel cancer during their lifetime. See more at:
