3 3 Objectives & Methodology

4 Background Background: The UPSB has been tracking U.S. consumer attitudes and usage (A&U) of potatoes among female primary shoppers since Paper questionnaires were used until 2005, when the study switched to an online format. The A&U tracks self-reported usage of potatoes (especially at the dinner occasion), health attribute awareness, and attitudes toward potatoes. Results help guide messaging and gauge the success of consumer communication programs. The consumer target audience, Linda, was further refined. The 2011 A&U provided new benchmarks for future tracking among the refined Linda audience. The 2014 study examined Millennials as target where relevant and interesting. The 2015 study marked significant audience changes as the USPB began to track a more representative sample of U.S. consumers, including a closer look at the Food Enthusiast target was also the first year the study was fielded by Toluna (previously Synovate, ). The 2017 study continues to track a more representative sample of U.S. consumers as well as the Food Enthusiast. It further expands usage tracking to beyond dinner occasions. Tracking measures are provided where applicable. The 2018 study includes two new segments (Performance & Active ) and has undergone a significant methodological shift from previous years in design and flow. Recent consumption is measured on the past 24 hours as well as 7 days (per previous study design). Tracking measures are provided where applicable. 4

Still thinking about the meals you had in the past 7 days, please indicate how many of them included each of the following types of food.

88 1. Potato shares appear to be lower than in 2017, though the change of adding out-of-home meal occasions could have an effect as we are adding occasions in which potatoes have a smaller share overall 2. While potato share is highest during dinner for all respondents, the target subgroups over-index on potato usage during other meal occasions 3. Potato chip consumption decreased in 2018 and contributed less to overall potato share of meal occasions 88
