2 Food Stamp Nutri/on Educa/on Goals To improve the likelihood that persons eligible for Food Stamps will make healthy food choices within a limited budget and choose physically ac/ve lifestyles consistent with USDA Dietary Guidelines and My Plate.
3 Eat Smart New York! Healthy Lifestyle Goals To assist Food Stamp recipients to: Make half their plate fruits and vegetables; Eat whole grains; Switch to fat- free or low- fat milk products; Increase physical ac/vity; Reduce sedentary behaviors as part of a healthy lifestyle; Maintain appropriate calorie balance during each stage of life childhood, adolescence, adulthood, pregnancy and breasqeeding, and older age.
4 Why Do Recipients Need Nutri/on Educa/on? Many adults do not know specific foods they should eat to maintain a healthy diet. Many households have higher prevalence of health condi/ons related to poor nutri/on, including overweight and obesity. Many people lack skills related to selec/ng, preparing and storing healthy food.
5 New York State Objec8ves 2014 for Adults and Youth served by SNAP- Ed Programming 1. Increase the consump;on of fruits and vegetables. 2. Decrease the consump;on of sugar- sweetened beverages 3. Increase physical ac;vity as part of a healthy lifestyle and maintenance of calorie balance during each stage of life
6 In Suffolk our evidence based programs focus on behavior change. Classes are tailored to a wide range of people- - - adults, youths, and seniors. Group or one- on- one classes Mass media efforts to develop understanding and awareness Training volunteers to assist with direct teaching of adults and youth. Classes are offered bilingually as well. Program Delivery Lessons are focused around key nutri/onal messages and objec/ves Lessons include a food demonstra/on and physical ac/vity.
7 Classes are interactive and fun...!...designed for families, individuals and seniors.
8 Tasting new foods is part of most sessions.
9 Healthy meal ideas that families can prepare together are shared.
10 Food Shopping & Label Reading
11 Participants are encouraged to make healthy changes, try new foods.
12 Opportunities to practice new skills are incorporated into classes.
13 Staff make healthy eating fun.
14 Youth Programming
15 The delivery of youth programs takes on various forms. Schools AZer- School Care 4- H & EFNEP clubs Community Centers During theses educa/onal lessons we discuss, Nutri/on, Food Safety, Food Prepara/on Skills, and Physical Ac/vity.
16 Food Preserva/on and Canning
17 Each participant that completes a series receives a certificate.
18 Program Success The suppor/ve learning environment created in the program encourages par/cipants to increase their knowledge and skills leading to improved nutri/on prac/ces for themselves and their families. The program made a difference in the lives of par/cipants through increased knowledge and skills leading to improved nutri/on behaviors consistent with improvements to the health and well- being of low- income families. 87% improved nutri/on prac/ces 89% improved food resources management skills. 92% reported improved food safety prac/ces 40% became more physically ac/ve Longitudinal data demonstrated reten/on of these posi/ve behaviors six months azer gradua/on from the program.
19 I used to eat the whole bag of Doritos by myself I did not know that this package had more than one serving and all of the calories. I can save a lot of money if I truly used that serving size on the package to serve my family. I am going drink more water and less premade sweetened Iced Tea. I am reading labels more, ge@ng my blood sugar under control, and understand all about carb counang. I lost a total of 13 lbs. by eaang more fruits and vegetables and exercising more. This was accomplished during the 7 weeks our nutriaon program. Jasmin took the informaaon from her 24- Hour Food Recall DiagnosAc Report and increased her family s whole grains and reduced the amount of sugar. The educator remarks that once the groups are empowered with this knowledge, they are eager to share the informaaon with their families and will make healthy lifestyle changes.
