2 Teen Talk Newsletter Fall 2016 Have you had your yearly check-up? If you haven t been sick in awhile, you may think that you don t need to go to the doctor. However, it s important to see your doctor once a year. Here are a few reasons why you should see your doctor for a routine well visit: To make sure that you are in good health To get immunizations to prevent serious infections To ask questions about your health To talk about your health habits such as what foods you eat and how often you exercise When you go in for a check-up, your doctor will ask you questions to see if you have had any problems with your health over the past year. Your doctor may check your height, weight, and listen to your heart and lungs. Your doctor will also check to see if you are up to date on your shots. When you go to the doctor for a well visit, we will give you a $5 gift card. For members between the ages of 11-21, here s how you can get your gift card: Make an appointment with your doctor for a WELL VISIT in 2016 Take the enclosed form with you to the doctor s office Have your doctor sign the form to verify the date of your visit Fax the form to HAP Midwest at (248) When we receive your postcard, we will send you a $5 gift card! Call your doctor today to make an appointment for your yearly physical. Take Charge of Your Healthyou ll be glad you did! Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) EPSDT is for members who are under 21 years old. EPSDT detects and treats health care problems early through regular medical, dental, vision and hearing checkups, in-depth diagnosis of problems, and treatment of those problems. When should EPSDT health checkups be done? Checkups should begin at birth. By the age of 18 months, a child should have six to eight checkups. From ages 2 to 21, children should have one checkup a year. What should an EPSDT health checkup include? The person's age determines which parts of the checkup he or she will receive. Not all tests are given at every checkup. Checkups may include: a complete health, nutritional and developmental history a head to toe unclothed physical examination health education a growth and developmental check testing of urine and blood if needed immunizations as needed additional tests or exams as needed

3 Immunizations Immunizations (shots) are one of the most important ways to keep you healthy and protect you from many diseases. It is very important that you have all the shots that are recommended by your doctor. Call your doctor today to make sure you are up to date! If you would like a copy of the current Immunization schedule, please call the Health Management Department at (248) , toll free at (888) and press the prompt for Health Education, or visit our website at hap.org/midwest All About Asthma Asthma is a lung condition that causes a person to have difficulty breathing. In most people with asthma, the difficulty with breathing happens periodically. When it does happen, it is known as an asthma flare up or as an asthma attack. A person having an asthma flare-up may cough, wheeze, be short of breath, and feel an intense tightness in the chest. The best way to manage asthma is prevention. Medications can play an essential role in preventing flare-ups, environmental control is also very important. Make sure to pay attention to pollutants in the environment, don t smoke, and be smart about exercising. It is important to see your doctor regularly. With your doctor, draft a plan for taking maintenance medications and managing an attack. Then be sure to follow your asthma action plan. Asthma Triggers: Allergens: dust, mold, pollen Pollutants: chalk dust, smoke, cigarette smoke, perfumes, colognes, cleaning solutions Exercise induced asthma: triggered by physical activity Weather: extreme heat or humidity can trigger asthma Cold, flu, and viral infections: can increase risk for asthma flare ups Controlling your asthma: Rescue medications: act quickly to stop asthma symptoms when they start. Controller medications: used to manage and prevent symptoms from happening Asthma action plan: work closely with your doctor to come up with a treatment plan that is right for you Asthma doesn't have to prevent you from doing what you love! Sure, it takes a bit of work, but if you follow your asthma action plan, take your medications properly, recognize your symptoms, and check in with your doctor regularly, you can do anything that other teens can do. Let s Talk Nutrition: 5 Ways to Reach & Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle The key to a healthy weight is regular exercise and good eating habits. Healthy teens should get at least 45 minutes each day. Each week you should get the right balance of activity and good nutrition. The goal of a healthy lifestyle is to develop a diet that you can maintain for life, not just for a few weeks or months. Healthy living is most likely to be successful when people change their habits, replacing old, unhealthy ones with new, healthy behaviors. Here are some ways to make that happen:

4 1. Exercise. Regular physical activity burns calories and builds muscle both of which help you look and feel good and keep weight off. Walking the family dog, cycling to school, and doing other things that increase your daily level of activity can all make a difference. If you want to burn more calories, increase the intensity of your workout and add some strength exercises to build muscle. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even when you aren't exercising. 2. Portion Control. Think of portion control in terms of balance. We all need balance of carbohydrates, protein, fiber, fat, vitamins, and minerals. With portion sizes being bigger than they used to be, balancing foods can be difficult. Choosing smaller plates, sharing restaurant portions, or boxing half your meal can be a start in reducing portion sizes. 3. Reduce Screen Time. Lessen the amount of time spent watching TV, looking at the computer, being on mobile devices, and/or playing video games. Limit screen time to less than 2 hours a day. You could be walking at the park with your friend for an hour rather than texting them. 4. Eat The Rainbow. Fruits and vegetables are the foundation of a healthy diet. The brighter the better- branch out on greens (kale, mustard greens, Chinese cabbage, etc.), eat naturally sweet vegetables (corn, sweet potatoes, beets, etc.) to curb your sweet tooth, and fresh fruits to fill up on fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants. When you fill up on fruits and veggies, you're less likely to overeat when it comes to high-calorie foods like chips or cookies. 5. Don t Skip Breakfast. Breakfast kick-starts your metabolism. That is why it is called breakfast. To break the fast. People who skip breakfast often feel so hungry that they eat more later on. So they get more calories than they would have if they ate breakfast. In fact, people who skip breakfast tend to have higher BMIs than people who eat breakfast. For example, below is a healthy meal you can make in 30 minutes that includes some of the foods that are included in a healthy diet. Slow Cooker Chicken Enchilada Soup Ingredients Preparation 1 pound boneless chicken breast Dice onion & garlic 2 (14oz) cans black beans Add all ingredient to slow cooker 1 (15oz) can corn Cook on low for 8 hours or high for 6 hours 1 (14oz) can fire-roasted tomatoes with juice Once time is complete, shred chicken with fork 2 cups chicken stock Mix and serve. You may add toppings of choice 1 (10oz) red enchilada sauce 1 (4oz) green chiles 2 cloves garlic, 1 medium onion, 1 tsp salt, tsp cumin Get the Facts: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the United States. Most people who become infected with HPV will not have any symptoms and will clear the infection on their own, but some people infected with HPV will get genital warts. Genital warts are small, hard bumps in or around the genitals.

5 What Happens? Genital warts can be spread to other people if they are left untreated and ignored. Prevention Only certain way to prevent genital warts is abstinence the decision not to have sex. If you do have sex, you can get some protection by using a latex condom properly when any form of sexual intercourse (oral, vaginal, or anal) is performed. HPV vaccine that protects against some strains of HPV that can cause genital warts, cervical cancer, and other types of cancer. If you have questions about HPV or the HPV vaccine, talk to your doctor. Preventive health services are check-ups, shots and screening tests. Young adolescents should have check-ups regularly, older adolescents should see the doctor yearly, and children under age two should see the doctor several times a year.
