Why Doesn t Everyone Know About These Issues Most of us are deluged every day with misinformation about diet and health, some due to financial conflicts of interest: Government Health professionals organizations Disease groups The media Food, drug, device makers (Advertising) Well-meaning but misinformed health professionals 10
11 Example: Suddenly it s Fashionable to eat Lard! Dr. Krauss, has not always been in favor of eating animal flesh and fat. His research in 1986, before he started working for the beef and dairy industries, clearly explains that the high consumption of animal foods and low intake of plant foods promotes atherosclerosis (heart disease and strokes). Suddenly it s Fashionable to eat Lard! His opinions and writings changed after he started working for the National Cattleman s Beef Association and the National Dairy Council (as early as 1990). 11
12 Suddenly it s Fashionable to eat Lard! His most famous publication was in March of 2010 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (research funded by The National Dairy Council). This paper is the key research that is cited to argue that eating all that saturated fat and cholesterol, (along with big doses of people-poisoning environmental chemicals and loads of infectioncausing bacteria, parasites, and viruses) is good for you and your family. Suddenly it s Fashionable to eat Lard! In the same issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition Jeremiah Stamler, MD was criticizing this flawed paper: but nobody in the lay press (such as New York Times, Wall Street Journal) cares, maybe People like Good News about Their Bad Habits? 12
13 from Well-Meaning Health Care Professionals, many whom have little nutrition training: On average, students received 23.9 contact hours of nutrition instruction during medical school (range: 2 70 h). Only 40 schools required the minimum 25 h recommended by the National Academy of Sciences. 16 24 patients in 1985 who had collectively experienced 49 cardiovascular events: 15 cases of angina 13 cases of disease progression 7 bypass surgeries 4 heart attacks 3 strokes 2 angioplasties 2 worsening stress tests After dietary intervention: Cholesterol lowered from an average of 246 to below 150 Disease progression had been stopped and many had experienced reversal Angina improved or eliminated Exercise capacity increased, sexual function restored No further cardiovascular events, drugs or procedures 16
17 6 patients left the study and experienced: 4 cases of angina 4 bypass surgeries 1 angioplasty 1 case congestive heart failure 1 death 11 events in 6 patients who quit, vs. no events in 18 patients who were compliant! Dietary Intervention works! Lets look at Traditional Treatments 17
18 Crestor (a drug to lower cholesterol) reduces the risk of major cardiovascular events by only 1.2% Lipitor (a drug to lower triglycerides in the blood) reduces the risk of major cardiovascular events by 1.6% Angioplasty: Involves risk often the inflating of the balloon nicks the plaque and causes the toxic ingredients to be released, activating clotting mechanism Within a few months, 50% of arteries are blocked again 18
19 The AVERT study: Patients were randomized to receive Lipitor or angioplasty The patients who did not receive surgery experienced fewer heart attacks, less chest pain, and made fewer visits to the hospital Waters, D. Aggressive lipid-lowering therapy compared with angioplasty on stable coronary artery disease. NEJM December 9, 1999 vol 341: no 24 does NOT work most of the time Surgery bypasses large stable, plaques and calcified arteries Volatile plaques in the arteries throughout the rest of the body are left alone 19
20 THREE MAJOR STUDIES: 1. Veterans Administration Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery Cooperative Study Group European Coronary Surgery Study Group Coronary Artery Surgery Study 1990 All three show that the outcomes for patients who have surgery vs. patients who only take drugs are the same, except those with damage to the left ventricle or those with unrelenting chest pain When you change diet and lifestyle, these volatile plaques become stable within a few weeks; this actually reduces your risk of heart attack or stroke 25 type 1 and 25 type 2 diabetics were placed on a whole-foods, plant-based diet high in both carbohydrate and fiber. After just three weeks, type 1 diabetics were able to lower their insulin requirements by 40%, and their cholesterol dropped by 30%. 21 Dr. Neal Barnard s research consistently shows that patients lose more weight, are able to significantly reduce or even eliminate medications, and show significant improvements in A1C levels (a marker for average blood sugar levels during the previous 2-3 months) after only a few weeks. 23 Coronary artery disease progressed while in the White House Endured a useless bypass surgery that did not work Endured angioplasty because the bypass did not work Became frightened and decided to take matters into his own hands: Read The China Study and Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, changed his diet and got well Mostly Plant-Based (90% or more of calories) Eat mostly from the four major food groups fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes 23
24 The Right Diet for Humans Consume mostly whole, natural foods Increase fiber consumption Reduce fat; eliminate oils Eliminate dairy foods Reduce processed foods and added sugar Differentiate between food and a treat Drink clean water Eat an excellent breakfast every day Exercise responsibly is important Sleep gives the body a chance to repair itself Change your stress response 24
25 Population Studies: There are 7 billion people living on the planet and most of them do not experience heart disease, diabetes, cancer arthritis, obesity, and other degenerative conditions at the rate that we do. The reason their diets and lifestyles are different than ours! A study was commissioned by the Premier of China in the 1970 s death rates from 12 types of cancer were determined by surveying 880 million people in 2400 Chinese counties 25
26 The conclusion: some cancers were more common in some places than others in some parts of China, cancer rates were as much as several hundred times higher than in other locations Yet they were all ethnically the same! Dr. T. Colin Campbell of Cornell University assembled a team to investigate This became the most comprehensive study of nutrition ever conducted it resulted in 94,000 correlations, 8000 of them statistically significant Statistical relationship established between animal food intake and cancer rates Relationship was established between animal food intake and cholesterol Elevated cholesterol was associated with both increased risk of heart disease and cancer 26
27 Migration Studies When people move from a country with low disease rates to a Westernized country, they experience the same disease and obesity rates as their adopted country within only 15 years The reason they adopt the diet and lifestyle habits of their adopted country 27
28 Studies of identical twins show that diet and lifestyle differences account for differences in health outcomes Doctors who treat patients with dietary intervention report that patients get well based on their compliance on the diet, not family history The Power Plate 28
