1 My Slim Factor Journey For most of my adult life I had always been a healthy 143lb (65kg), give or take a few pounds, but after the birth of my second child, now 12, I had trouble getting back to my pre-pregnancy weight. Things came to a head when I found myself almost 13 stone and with a BMI of over 30 I then realised I was officially obese. As a nutritionist and naturopath I have always been a very health conscious person; even at my heaviest I was still eating healthily (or so I thought), which made being overweight all the more frustrating. The weight started to creep on after the birth of my second child. Instead of reverting back to my pre-pregnancy weight, as I did with my first child, I simply couldn t lose the weight I had gained in my pregnancy. Over the next nine years I gradually went from a size to a size The turning point for me came when I couldn t find anything to wear for a family function. Still half convinced that I was a size 14, I blamed high street sizes for getting smaller. The truth was, I was having trouble fitting into size 18 clothes; I tipped the scales at just under 183 lb (85 kg), and at 5 feet and 6 inches, I had a BMI of over 30. I was officially obese! In all the time I had gradually been getting heavier, my weight had never really been a concern to me; I ate a healthy wholefood diet of fresh fruit and vegetables and so I d always considered myself to be healthy.

2 But, with a BMI of over 30, I was beginning to feel that as a nutritionist, I was no longer a good role model. It was time to take action! Healthy eating alone hadn t worked for me, so perhaps a more structured programme was what I needed. I followed a unique nutritional program that had been developed by Dr. Simeons in 1950 and within 3 weeks I started to notice a difference; my clothes didn t feel as tight on me and I had lost 11lb (5kg). Finally my weight was headed in the right direction! I continued with my new weight management plan and 5-6 months later I finally weighed in at my pre-pregnancy weight of 143lb (65kg). I was delighted. Best of all, I recently wore one of my favourite dresses, a beautiful size 12 cocktail dress, which I was convinced I d never be able to wear again. I was thrilled with the results and have never felt as healthy as I do now. The program I followed is aimed at women who wish to achieve rapid weight loss to get into a safe weight zone in order to be out of immediate danger that is often accompanied with obesity. 3 The Slim Factor expands on Dr. Simeons program Pound & Inches. When I achieved so much success with his program I wanted to delve further to understand the mechanism behind the weight loss. Simeons at the time did not fully understand why the program worked as well as it did in sustaining weight loss. Since the 1950 s the hormones leptin and ghrelin have been discovered and how leptin resistance is a very real problem in regard to success in losing weight. 4 What the protocol does is to bring harmony to the natural hormones in your body to help manage the fat that is stored within your body. This is achieved by accelerating the release of fats that can be difficult to access and hence be released. This technique of weight loss was developed by Dr. Simeons, I am simply updating the program for modern usage. The hormone hcg is produced normally during pregnancy. The function of this hormone is to help keep the baby from starving to death in periods when the mother does not eat as a result of famine or other causes. What the hcg hormone does is to release the fat that are stored within the body and use them as food for the baby. Dr. Simeons discovered that if a person on very low calorie diet is given HCG, the fats stored in the body can be released. Many that have followed this protocol reported that they were not hungry when on the protocol, the reason being that the hcg releases the stored fat into the bloodstream, is usually equivalent to the individual having taken a very healthy fat meal. Thus you are being satiated by your very own fat stores as they are being released.

5 The protocol is divided into 3 phases First phase: Excessive eating phase The first two days of the protocol. You can eat as much as you like as long as the diet contains high calorie and fat. You will also take the hcg drops as instructed. Second Phase: Measured calorie (500cal) phase This phase takes 21 days. You are required to follow a 500 calorie intake from specific foods as outlined in the program, consisting of vegetables, fruits, meals with 4oz of protein. You also continue to take the hcg as instructed. Third Phase: Maintenance Phase This is the last 3 weeks of the protocol and you are restricted to eating food that contains neither sugar nor starch. The good news is that you are no longer restricted to 500 calories a day. This allows the body to get used to the new you with further body sculpting.
