Effect of Weekly Exercise Frequency on BMI Dalton Trembow
Context and Literature Review Approximately two thirds of Americans are overweight or obese (1) Overweight (BMI kg/m 2 ) Obese (BMI 30 kg/m 2 ) Excess body fat greatly increases risk of CVD, diabetes, stroke, cancer, injury Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the #1 cause of death in America Moderate intensity aerobic exercise is best for weight loss (4) Takes about 40 minutes to enter fat metabolism during exercise Intensity and duration are well documented, minimal research on frequency
Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the frequency of weekly exercise sessions, without altering the total exercise time, on BMI score over a four-week period.
Methods Participants included 30 Rowan University undergraduate students, both male and female, ages years old Pre and post height (in) and weight (lbs) were measured by two Rowan University graduate students in Rowan s exercise physiology lab using a digital fitness scale with height rod Followed testing protocol developed by project manager\ Data was recorded in Table 1
Description of Study Participants completed 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise weekly for 4 weeks Low frequency group (2-3 days/week) High frequency group (4-5 days/week) Approved exercises included walking/jogging, elliptical machine, and cycling No manipulation of diet
Instrumentation: BMI Testing Protocol Step 1: Measure the participant s weight by having them stand on the scale. Only light clothing should be worn. Record the result in pounds. Step 2: Measure the participant s height using the height rod. Participant should stand straight with feet flat and back towards the height rod. No shoes or other footwear should be worn. Socks are acceptable. Record the result in inches. Step 3: Calculate BMI using the following formula. BMI = [weight (lb) / [height (in)] 2 ] x 703
Results Participant Height (in) Pre Weight (lbs) Post Weight (lbs) Mean SD Exercise Frequency Low (2-3 days/week) High (4-5 days/week) Participant Pre BMI Post BMI Participant Pre BMI Post BMI Mean Mean SD SD p-value p-value
BMI BMI Results Low Frequency Exercise (2-3 days/week) High Frequency Exercise (4-5 days/week) Participants Participants Pre BMI Post BMI Pre BMI Post BMI
Discussion Only low frequency group showed statistically significant reduction in BMI Each session was longer to complete total 150 minutes weekly minutes as opposed to 30 to 37 minutes Spent much more time in fat metabolism than high frequency group High frequency never fully converted because sessions were less than 40 minutes More fat burned in the same amount of time lead to the greater reduction in BMI
Next Steps & Reflection Increase duration of study Increase sample size of study Implement nutritional component to control for differences in diet Study was simple, inexpensive, and successful in showing that frequency of exercise has an effect on weight loss
