1 A STUDY OF HUMAN RIGHT AWARENESS, INSECURITY, SOCIAL FREEDOM AND LIFE SATISFACTION AMONG THE WOMEN VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN URBAN AND RURAL AREA 1. Introduction: Domestic Violence: Since thousands of year human beings live have been affected by violence. Year after year this phenomenon becomes more serious and dangerous. It contains many kinds, and the most common one is the violence against women which needs to a radical treatment. Since this gender is the most vulnerable to violence. There are many reasons for this phenomenon. According to psychologist, lack of education, media, and nature are the main reasons which lead to this non civilized phenomenon. Psychologist believes that human beings nature could be consider as the main reason that leads to violence. They believe, because of the man s body structure is stronger than women s body structure. The violence against women is more common. They confirm that the same man, who uses verbal and physical abuse against a woman, won t use them against a man who is stronger than him. Human Rights: Human beings are rational. By virtue of being human, they possess certain basic and inalienable rights, commonly known as human rights. They became operative with their birth. Human rights, being the birth right, are therefore inherent in all human beings irrespective of their caste, carried, religion, sex and nationality. Human rights are also sometimes referred to as fundamental rights, basic rights, inherent rights, natural rights and birth rights. Human rights are a generate form, which embraces civil rights, civil liberties and social, economical and cultural rights. The idea of human rights is bound up with the idea of human dignity. Thus all those rights, which are essential for the maintenance of human dignity, are called human rights. (Mathews, S.K.,2005). Insecurity: Feelings of insecurity arise from a lack of control and confidence. When you have control of a situation, you aren t so likely to get upset. If someone is giving you a hard time, you can just utilize your power to deal with it. But if you are relying on the cooperation of others in a way that you cannot effectively enforce, it can be very frustrating. When you have a large degree of confidence in something, it is less upsetting when someone disagrees with you. Even if you do get into an argument about something 1

2 you are confident in, it probably won t make you feel too disturbed and upset. Instead, you will probably just laugh when you hear something that you confidently know to be wrong. On the other hand, when you have a belief, but you are very unsure about it, you will more easily get agitated and defensive when people challenge you on that belief. Social Freedom: For centuries women have been treated as weak, obedient, shy and timid partner of men and thereby have enjoyed an inferior status in society. Lamphere (1977) has discussed the issue of sexual equality versus female s subordination in great length. Several other studies have explored more or less similar feature of concern of the female condition in global perspective (Friedle, 1975; Kessler, 1976; Reiter, 1975). However, in recent years desire for social freedom among women has manifested itself in protest and revolt against the traditional social norms and taboos which place them in inferior roles and status and make them subservient to men. With the growth in education and vocational opportunities women throughout the world have become more conscious of their rights of equality and freedom and have revolted against the conventional norms (Phandnis and Malani, 1978). Women are taking up non traditional roles and are developing a new outlook in life. They are advocating for free love and sex. Abortion has been legalized. In developed societies there is a growing craze for test tube babies. The women lib movement has become a worldwide event. They demand equality in true sense of the term in all spheres of life. Recently propounded Androgyny theory claims that perpetuation of traditional sex roles distinctions is dysfunctional and androgynous individuals have superior adjustment Life Satisfaction: Life satisfaction is the psychological well being in general or satisfaction with life as a whole. The life satisfaction of the aged various according to once own personal characteristics and life style. The general level of life satisfaction depends on the individual s, personal and social satisfaction. - (Ruff, 1996) Life satisfaction refers to person s general happiness, freedom from tension, interest in life, etc. It is defined as the function of actual physical fitness perceived by an individual. The extent to which the needs of individuals are satisfied and their aspiration for better life is fulfilled denotes the life satisfaction of the individual. As opined by Palmore and Liukart (1972). Life satisfaction has been defined according to health status, 2

3 social variables, like income level, family satisfaction and organizational activities. It is relatively sensitive to changes in circumstances. 2. Out of which 90 would be government institutes related women and 90 would be non-government institute s related women. From each of these 90 women 45 low and 45 high educated women would be taken as a sample. After constitute the sample Human right awareness scale, Insecurity scale, Social freedom scale and Life satisfaction scale were administered on the selected sample. To avoid the fatigue and warm up effect all test were taken separately. All the instruction were strictly followed as per describe in manual of the correspondence test. Later on, the responses of the subjects on the each test was scored as per scoring procedure describe in the particular test and their scores on Human right awareness scale, Insecurity scale, Social freedom scale and Life satisfaction scale (dependent variable) were obtained. These score were further statistically analyzed under four techniques F test, t test, correlation and Multiple regression to study the Human right awareness, Insecurity, Social freedom, Life satisfaction and factor of life satisfaction among women victims of domestic violence of urban and rural area and to find relation between them. 10. Statistical Analysis : Following statistical analysis was used for analyzing the data.
