A toolkit to develop a health and wellbeing programme for pregnant women with a BMI 30+ D-02098
aims to address the risks associated with maternal obesity (BMI 30+) and support women to take small steps to improve their health and wellbeing. A multiagency, midwife led programme supported by the Institute for Health Care Improvement has been developed. is a fun, interactive 8 week programme, which aims to inform women of the risks associated with a raised BMI30+ in pregnancy and provide the women with the tools to reduce these risks and support a healthier pregnancy by: Increasing physical activity levels through gentle walking sessions Increasing awareness of a healthy diet through fun interactive group sessions Improving practical cooking skills through hands on cooking sessions with others. also gives women the opportunity to meet and socialise Health & Social Care Moray is a joint collaboration between Moray Council and NHS Grampian. 2 Produced by Moray Council
Identify your team (stake holders, walk leader, midwives, child healthy weight coach, confidence to cook trainer, public health practitioner) Identify if funding is available / required Agree criteria and invitation process, and invite all eligible women (BMI 30+) (print and distribute out invitations) Consult those women concerning: day, time, duration etc. Set programme format (number of weeks, activity order) and view resources Determine maternal wellbeing & knowledge (Use Wellbeing Wheel during weeks 1, 4, 8 to chart improvement) Agree how to record and evaluate tools Agree method of weekly reminder for the attending women Agree on including women from previous groups into new walking groups Access to toilet facilities and refreshments Top tips? Identify clear roles and remits for your team Promote as part of antenatal care. Complete disclaimer, emergency contact and non-clinical consent form. Baby Steps Programme 3
Pick and risk assess all walking routes prior to your walking class Ensure two walk leaders if possible; one to lead the group and the other to ensure no one gets left behind Have a backup plan for bad weather Check with women throughout the walk to ensure their wellbeing Hand out activity dairy every week Ensure women are appropriately dressed View wellbeing talk and walking resources Hand out activity diary Top tips Plan walking routes to pass places of interest to pregnant women (library highlight book bug and library card, leisure centres aqua natal classes, baby groups such as baby massage and infant feeding support) Remember to send a reminder Take some water and snacks (banana) with you 4 Produced by Moray Council
Ensure all cooking classes are delivered by Confidence to Cook trainers Ask the women to choose recipes from the Confidence to Cook pack (starter, main and desert fake aways are very popular) Contact the group to find out how many are attending to prevent over purchasing of ingredients Orientate the women to the kitchen Assist with cooking when required Sit together as a group to eat Hand out the Confidence to Cook recipes to the women View all cooking resources Hand out activity diary Top tips Ensure venue has cooking equipment (cookers, pots, pans and spoons) Plan for weekly food shop on cooking weeks Remind the women to bring their own containers to take away the food they have prepared Baby Steps Programme 5
Study programme Evaluate invite process Evaluate venue Evaluate feedback forms Evaluate wellbeing wheels Evaluate activity diaries Evaluate wellbeing talks Evaluate walks Evaluate cooking classes Review attendance Celebrate success and share findings with partners and colleagues Top tips? Organise evaluation material in advance. Accurate information gathering is important. 6 Produced by Moray Council
Baby Steps Programme 7
