2 In partnership with the Public Health Agency and Safefood we worked to raise awareness of Childhood Obesity through a Trust wide campaign rolled out from Monday 3rd to Friday 7th July The campaign raised awareness of childhood obesity and offered practical advice to tackle everyday habits associated with excess weight. The campaign also reminded parents and carers of the health challenges posed by excess weight and the negative impact this can have on a child s quality of life. Various individuals from the Western Trust together with the community and voluntary sector rolled out a range of events that included; works shops, awareness sessions and fun days. Current statistics show that only 7% of babies in Northern Ireland are still being breastfed at 12 months so it is vital that we show public support and continue to raise awareness. For additional information about breastfeeding or breastfeeding activities within your area contact your midwife, health visitor or breastfeeding support group. 5 Fun Fruit Crumble Recipe Corner Families Growing Together Families Growing Together was a recent 6 week pilot programme rolled out with the help of local families from Roe Valley Residents Association, Limavady. The programme took a holistic approach that was fun; involving interactive activities that included growing your own herbs, cooking and physical activity. Families Growing Together Pilot in Limavady. This recipe is packed with a collection of delicious fruit and can be enjoyed by the whole family. This is a great recipe to get children involved with the preparation. Serves 6. Ingredients 8 eating apples 1 teaspoon of cinnamon 1 banana (ripe) 1 /2 orange 1 tablespoon sugar 1 punnet raspberries or blackberries 150g butter taken from the fridge just before use 75g flour (plain) 75g porridge oats 50g crisp rice cereal Method 1. Preheat over to c/180 0 C fan/gas Peel, core and grate apples, place in a bowl, add mashed banana and cinnamon, mix well. 3. Add the juice from halved orange. 4. In a separate bowl mix the flour and oats, rub in the butter, add slightly cruched bran flakes and sugar, mixture should resemble a crumble consistency. 5. Add fruit mixture to a baking dish and sprinkle over crumble topping. 6. Place in the oven for 20mins or until topping is golden brown. 7. Serve with custard or full fat natural yogurt.
6 IN THE NEWS As always we remind readers of the importance of evidence based information. It is important that the information you read or hear is from a reputable, evidence based source. There is a lot of incorrect and misleading information in the tabloids and on social media sites. In recent months we have been asked a lot of questions regarding introducing peanuts and eggs into a child s diet prior to 6months (age of weaning) in the hope of reducing the risk of allergy later in life. A recent joint statement released by SACN (Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition) and COT (Committee on Toxicity) has recommended the following in relation to the introduction on peanuts and eggs to a child s diet: That there was insufficient data to demonstrate that the introduction of peanut or hen s egg into the infant diet between four and six months of age reduced the risk of developing food allergy to any greater extent than introduction from around six months Reasonable data exist to demonstrate that the deliberate exclusion or delayed introduction of peanut or hen s egg beyond six to twelve months of age may increase the risk of allergy to the same foods The government should continue to recommend exclusive breastfeeding for around the first six months of life. Advice on complementary feeding should state that foods containing peanut and hen s egg need not be differentiated from other complementary foods. Complementary foods should be introduced in an age-appropriate form from around six months of age, alongside continued breastfeeding, at a time and in a manner to suit both the family and individual child Families of infants with a history of early-onset eczema or suspected food allergy may wish to seek medical advice before introducing these foods Your Vitamin D Reminder Advice for adults and children over 5 years old. During the Autumn and Winter, you need to get vitamin D from your diet because the sun isn't strong enough for the body to make vitamin D. Since it's difficult for people to get enough vitamin D from food alone, everyone (including pregnant and breastfeeding women) should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10mcg of vitamin D during the Autumn and Winter. Between late March/early April to the end of September, most people can get all the vitamin D they need through sunlight on their skin and from a balanced diet. You may choose not to take a vitamin D supplement during these months. amins-minerals/pages/vitamin-d.aspx For the full statement please see: cotallergystatementfinal2.pdf Log onto the address above to find out more information about Vitamin D.
