Closing the Data Gap Louise Galloway Senior Advisor, Population Health Policy and Programs

Renewal: It is not just about changing the test 1. Improving data 2. Improving participation 3. They are interlinked

What is Data? Lieutenant Commander Data

Types of data collection and utilisation

Cancer control data

Why collect it: What do we use it for? Data underpins our organised approach Clinical Care Invitation and Reminder letters Inform targeted Recruitment Policy Development

Evaluation and monitoring

But we have some data gaps...

Example: Why is it important to close data gaps? Indigenous women have more than twice the incidence rate and four times the mortality rate than non-indigenous women. Is this related to lower screening participation? We don t know.

Why is it important to close data gaps? Over 80% of cervical cancers occur in women with no or a poor screening history Who are they? Where are they? Why don t they screen?

We need to make the next step The new test will help, but it is all about getting women to screen and take the test

Example: Victorian underscreened program (who, what, where and why)

Actions: Acting where we had the data Second Reminder Letter 12 months overdue

Actions: Acting where we had the data Cervical screening participation

Actions: Acting where we had the data Breast screening participation

Combining the data: Common areas of high participation High participation in BOTH Breast & Cervical screening

Combining the data: Common areas of low participation Low participation in BOTH Breast & Cervical screening

Example: Where we didn t have the data BreastScreen 2-yearly Participation Rate (50-69 year olds) 80.0% 70.0% 60.0% 50.0% 54.6% 49.9% 40.0% 37.8% 30.0% 20.0% 10.0% 0.0% Australia Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Non-English speaking

Example: Taking action to close the data gap

Action: Asking the question

Did it work? Percentage of Pap tests collected by nurses for which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Status, Language Spoken at Home and Country of Birth is collected, by year

Action: Removing barriers to address data gaps

Legislation is just the start We need: 1. Improved processes and systems to collect and provide colposcopy data to the register (this will be even more important in the renewed program). 2. Agreed processes and systems to collect and provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and CALD data to the register. 3. Under Renewal, easy process to access screening histories by GPs and for women to update contact details.

Closing the data gap: Renewal Cross border issues - one woman, multiple partial discordant records HPV immunisation status Improving our Cervical Cancer Register Invitations, reminders and recalls, and access to population data (e.g. Medicare) Collection, pathology and colposcopy outcome data Collection of CALD and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Status Interoperability Consistency across jurisdictions

Renewal: It is not just about changing the test 1. Improving data 2. Improving participation 3. They are interlinked and underpin the population approach We all have a role to play!
