J o i n U s i n t h e Fig h t for A i r 3 Our Heritage As America s oldest voluntary health organization, founded in 1904, we began our fight dedicated to combating tuberculosis (TB), the most dreaded disease at the time. As TB was brought under control, the focus expanded to all lung diseases including asthma, tobacco control and environmental health issues. Today, the focus is on healthy lungs and healthy air. Christmas Seals For more than 100 years, one of the most effective weapons in the fight for healthy lungs and healthy air has been the American Lung Association Christmas Seal. Millions of people place these decorative seals on their holiday cards and packages to show their support in the fight against lung disease. lungum.org 1-800-LUNG USA
4 Join Us in the Fight for Air Healthy Air and Healthy Lungs Healthy Air Six out of ten Americans live in areas where air pollution reaches unhealthy levels and threatens the health of millions of people. Air pollution can even kill. The American Lung Association has led the fight for healthy air for more than 40 years, advocating for stronger clean air standards, lower power plant emissions, and cleaner vehicles and fuels. We fight for clear skies over every community and healthy lungs throughout the country. It s our priority to keep harmful secondhand smoke out of our public and work places, and we look forward to a day when kids no longer battle airborne poisons in their own homes or fear an asthma attack. The American Lung Association isn t just fighting for air. We re fighting for all the things that make air worth breathing.
Join Us in the Fight for Air 5 Healthy Lungs The average person takes 15 to 20 breaths a minute over 20,000 breaths a day. Keeping your lungs healthy is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. We re proud of our landmark victories in the Fight for Air that include requiring cleaner diesel buses and trucks, getting power plants to clean up emissions and winning smoke-free work and public places across the nation. The American Lung Association is committed to helping people quit smoking, the most preventable cause of death in the US, and to prevent young people from starting in the first place. Our gold standard Freedom From Smoking (FFS) and FFS Online programs have helped thousands of smokers quit for good. To help people with lung disease breathe easier, we promote Better Breathers Clubs and our toll-free Lung HelpLine (1-800-LUNG-USA). The Lung HelpLine is staffed by registered nurses and respiratory therapists with extensive experience. We also lead efforts to teach health professionals about best-practice asthma management through our Asthma Educator Institute. Our work encompasses all aspects of our mission, to save lives by preventing lung disease and improving lung health. lungum.org 1-800-LUNG USA
