1 JANUS NEWS Janus of Santa Cruz Newsletter November 2017 The Future Looks Bright At Janus Each holiday season, I am reminded of the Janus mission statement: To provide supportive, hope-inspiring and successful SUD treatment services in a professional and compassionate environment while assisting individuals and families on their journey toward wellness and recovery. Our staff s commitment to providing extraordinary care, while also supporting each other, exemplifies our dedication to the Janus mission and to our clients. As we move into the holiday season, I would like to extend heartfelt cheers and thanks to the entire Janus organization, their families and extended families. The compassionate and professional care you provide on a daily basis is truly a blessing. Having completing my first month as Executive Director, I find myself extremely thankful for the opportunity. And, as 2017 draws to a close, we can all be proud of so many accomplishments, both individually and collectively. In addition to providing high-quality treatment, our staff has worked tirelessly to obtain numerous grant opportunities to increase client services and continue high-quality care into the future. Moving into 2018, Janus will be faced with rapid growth, opportunity, challenges, and continued success. The demand for more client services will require a collaborative effort of patience, tolerance, love, and communication. After spending the last 20 years as a board member and now as CEO, I am quite confident that we will be successful in our endeavors. We do this, not because we have to, but because we want to. This difficult, yet rewarding, work provides invaluable gifts of hope and inspiration to us and our clients every day. Season s Greetings! 2 Expanding MAT Treatment With Central Coast Recovery Options SC County Jail Janus new program will provide Medication Assisted Treatment to more county residents Sobering Center Janus is proud to be creating partnerships throughout the community to expand Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for those suffering with opioid use disorder. Officially titled Central Coast Recovery Options, Janus MAT expansion project has teamed up with community partners like Salud Para La Gente, Plazita Medical Clinic, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Dignity Health, Santa Cruz Health Centers, Encompass, and Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency to help combat the opioid crisis. Based on the Hub & Spoke model first implemented in the state of Vermont, Central Coast Recovery Options aims to expand MAT services through the support and training of local medical providers. Doctors will provide counseling services and medications (like buprenorphine) to patients in the comfort of their medical offices. Janus is currently working to prepare doctors so they can begin accepting and treating patients beginning in early For more about how the Hub & Spoke treatment modality has been employed successfully in Vermont, visit Department Spotlight: Janus MAT Clinics The Janus MAT clinics in Santa Cruz and Watsonville treat more than 600 clients, many who struggle with a multitude of substance use, personality and life issues. The Janus MAT team works together to create a welcoming environment where clients feel comfortable and staff stays motivated. Treating so many patients is rewarding but it can also be very challenging, says Program Manager, Jay Malispina. Our counselors, medical and administrative staff work very hard to provide high-quality services while representing the spirit of teamwork even when things get difficult. One way the team stays motivated is with Spirit Day a monthly theme day when staff members dress up and share potluck food. The team often comes together to recognize accomplishments, celebrate birthdays and holidays, or find any other reason to connect and take a break. Some past Spirit Day themes were Western, Hawaiian Shirt, Sports, and Pink Day (for cancer). Spirit Day for this November is a 70 s/80 s theme.

3 Defining Success at Janus of Santa Cruz November 28, 2017 Giving Tuesday is a global donation day dedicated to kindness and giving back to the community. At Janus, we re continually striving to raise the bar for providing high-quality service and cutting-edge treatment. From making services more accessible to upgrading our technology, Janus has done a lot to reach our goals this year. Some of our accomplishments in 2017 include: Awarded two multi-million dollar grants from the Department of Health Care Services to create our Central Coast Recovery Options program and expand medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties. Awarded a Dignity Health grant to support the Dominican Hospital Integrated Behavioral Health Transitions program. Beginning an expansion of our residential facility to increase client capacity and upgrade our commercial kitchen. Working to streamline and secure information gathering and sharing related to patient care at Janus. Provided a safe sobering location and access to community services to over 600 clients at the Janus Sobering Center. Staff exceeded our goals of cutting law enforcement processing time by 93% and reducing 647(f) jail bookings by an average of 51%.
